Alterations at dress shop or somewhere else?

__, on November 11, 2019 at 7:07 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 14

Did you get your dress altered at the same place that you purchased it from? Or did you go to a different shop? Was the reason price, reliability, etc? I purchased my dress from David's Bridal and while I'm far from needing it to be altered as my wedding is a ways away, I'm curious as to what all of your opinions/experiences are on the matter. I heard that DB and other bridal shops can be pretty pricey, so I'm thinking of looking elsewhere, but am wondering if maybe it's best to get them done at the same place the dress was purchased cause they would know the dress so well. Thanks in advance! Smiley smile

People say bad things about davids bridal but I had a great experience with them. My dress has five layers and I’m 4’11”. My hem was $200, added cap sleeves were $39, bra inserts were $20, and bustle was $100 with 7 points. The quality was great and they were really nice.

I got my dress at DB and had my alterations done there too. I had a great experience. I had a hem, a bustle, the top let out a tiny bit, and a hook dohickey to push between my clevage to keep my bra from showing. It was around 240 or so. I looked into it at other places and it was a lot more than that

Do be careful. My DB explained wheni bought my dress that they won't do alterations on any dress that has been touched by someone else, so you'll need to make sure the person you go to can handle the alterations. I think it depends on which DB you go to, but they should be decent.

Oh wow! Yeah I'm 5'0, and my dress has three, maybe four layers, so I was worried about the hemming being crazy expensive because I know they probably have to move some of the lace work up, but that's not bad for all that! Thanks for your comment!

Wow, that's good to know that they were inexpensive compared to others. And that isn't a bad price at all. Thank you! This helps me a lot!

Yeah they told me the same, that's why I'm asking the question to other brides cause I know how strict they are, so I wanted to see what everyone else decided on and why.

I was considering going somewhere else too, but I don't have time to be researching for places that can alter. DB is more convenient for me. I'm glad to hear how much it costs from the PP above, because that gives me a good idea of what I should be looking at when I go in for my first alterations!

I definitely think convenience is a huge factor for me too. I do have the time to research, but I’d rather focus my energy somewhere else if I can. The PP’s definitely helped me out, as well!

I took my dress (had to get it bustled), my MIL, all 3 bridesmaid dresses to get altered in some way or fashion. It cost total $150 by using my own seamstress. Plus we got them back in 5 days.

I was nervous to use DB alterations because when I talked to the lady she didn't seem to have a clear plan for the areas that I was most concerned about. I ended up taking mine to someone else and she had a clear plan and addressed my concerns thoroughly. I trust her. It will cost me more for an outside seamstress but I had no worries or concerns leaving my dress with her. Not sure if I chose right but I went with my gut!!!

David's Bridal is a franchise, so reviews of the quality of alterations at one location mean nothing about the quality of alterations at another. I'd look for reviews of the specific store you're thinking of.

But if you have an independent seamstress, she'll almost certainly be less expensive. You just have to check out reviews to make sure she'll do a good job.

We bought our dresses from a consignment store, and they didn't do their own alterations. But we found a very well regarded local seamstress, who did a great job.
