Alterations at David's Bridal

Susan, on January 3, 2018 at 6:12 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 20
I was wondering if anyone has had experience with getting alterations from David's Bridal. I am wondering how they will charge. Thank you any feedback.

I went to David’s Bridal. I only paid $144 for all of the alterations. I had a few things sewn on my dress. The bottom had to be lifted. It would’ve been more but the seamstress gave me a nice discount because I was the only person with alterations the day I went.

Find somewhere else to get alterations. A local tailor or seamstress will do a far better job and be cheaper.

I agree to find somewhere else but just make sure they are a bridal seamstress

My dress at David's Bridal was around $500. My alterations were around $500.

They had to take in my dress, hem it, and make a bustle. Since I chose the bustle with nine points, it cost more. But it was more comfortable than the the bustle with less points.

Im nervous about the price of the alterations. I don't want them to exceed the amount I paid for the dress. Lol I'm sure it will need to be shortened and I'm kind of considering replacing the back zipper with a corseted tieup. I have an awesome seamstress who always fixes my bridesmaids dresses, but I'm nervous about sending her MY dress.

It all depends on how the dress is and what it's made of. I spent about $250 for 7 bustles, shorten them hem, and halter

I’m going to a local seamstress because David’s quoted me three times as much as what my local seamstress will charge me! They also were insisting that there wasn’t enough material in my gown to let it out a half inch when I easily have 2 inches of seam allowance between the two sides. They were trying to convince me to size up in my dress and take it in everywhere else- which would have cost me almost as much as my dress.

Obviously this varies by location but the general consensus seems to be that DB’s alterations are overpriced and not well done. I took my DB dress to an independent tailor and paid a lot less than I would’ve at DB. I guess upcharging the alterations is how they make up for having a $99 sale a few times per year 🤷🏽‍♀️

I didn't go for bridal, but I did pay $60 once to hem a bridesmaids dress that cost $160 bucks. I'd look local first.

The estimate they gave me was more than I paid for the dress all I needed was the sash attached a hem and the corset put in. I found a lady at a local dress shop who done everything I needed for $75 they did a fitting and dressed me all up. She did a great job and I had more fun with those two old ladies than I did when I picked out my dress.

This was a few years ago, but i had a bridesmaid dress altered at David's. did the first fitting and needed more alterations. Planned to have the bride pick up the dress when she picked up her's since the alterations that were to be done on mine were going to be minimal, so they said. Well, night before the wedding, we took all the dresses out to let them hang in the bridal suite and realized they never did ANY of the alterations they charged me for. I still had stick pins in my bodice!! The Mother of the bride ended up sewing my dress together that night so i could try and have something to wear for her daughter's wedding. Ended up with the best man dancing with me the whole night...looking down my dress. He had a great night....Smiley angry

That's awful! How did David's handle their "mistake"? Did they refund?

Again, it was many years ago, but basically they said that since the dresses where picked up and treated as "inspected as complete", it was a done deal. They did offer a small percentage off a new dress ~ but at the time, none of us needed anything, and the amount was so pitiful it was not even worth it. Of course, the dress was so god awful ugly....it was a southern style wedding....yes, hoop skirts and lace. And to top it all off, pink! The only thing missing was the darn umbrella's! But even with everything, we had a good time at the wedding and i love my best friend ~ so we made do. My husband just made sure the best man "tripped" a time or two Smiley tongue

Got a DB dress for $450 (discontinued style) went to a local seamstress to have the strap removed (originally a one-shoulder sweetheart neckline), zipper back converted to a corset back. Seamstress went further to suggest that since the dress already fits perfectly to my waist she could put in a new zipper and put in the corset back for the rest of the back so I’ll be having all that done for $55.

IMO you’d be better off with a highly rated seamstress.

I purchased my dress and davids and had it altered there. I had a very positive experience! I have the hem shortened, which was expensive because of the layers and the lace. I also had the bustle and opted for extra buttons so paid more. I paid $300 which was worth it to me because of convenience and the confidence I felt with everyone working there. My BM have all bought their dresses and altered there as well. Nothing but good things to say about my davids bridal.

I'm having mine done at David's - all I need is a hem. It's going to cost a lot because they have to pull out all the lace appliqué and hem it, then reapply it. They said this was something their alterations department does daily with this exact dress so I felt more comfortable asking them than going to someone who wasn't familiar with this particular dress. We'll see how it turns out!

My dress at David's cost $550, and they encouraged me to buy a size up. Having it taken in at the zipper and hemmed cost over $400. The hem included removing the train. Mine is a "satin" ball gown with 2 layers of tulle and a lining skirt.
I went to the DB on 25th St in New York. I haven't seen the alteration yet, but if it's not 100% perfect, I am going to ask for a discount.
Here's what I learned -- if you get your dress and it feels too big, try a size down before you go in for alterations. Also, shop around on alterations. I assumed that having DB alter a DB dress would mean savings, but I was wrong. The hem and removing the train cost $150 each.
The service was fine. Nothing bad, but nothing exceptional.
