Alterations anxiety!!!

Julie, on April 2, 2021 at 9:01 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9
I did some light research on dress alterations and now I’m freaking out about how my dress is gonna get altered. 😅 my dress has lace all around the bottom and it’s illusion back and now I’m freaking out that there won’t be a way to alter it to fit me. It will have to be taken up and in just a little and also shortened bc it’s way too long on me. I know they do this all the time and it’s not the first time they’ve encountered a dress like this but someone please help me ease my nerves. 😩 I’m afraid she’s gonna tell me there’s nothing she can do. Please know that I mean no offense to anyone who is a seamstress, I’m just freaking out over here 😅😅Alterations anxiety!!! 1

It’s hard to tell how your dress is built without seeing the front, but assuming that the bodice and skirt are two pieces, they’ll likely detach the skirt, take the extra length from the top, then reattach. If you use an experienced seamstress, no one will be able to tell a difference. Beautiful dress btw!

Alterations anxiety!!! 2This is the front. I’ve got no clue if it’s two pieces lol can they still take from the middle though with the back being the way it is? TIA 😊

Just go for a consultation with a dressmaker/tailor to get their thoughts. I wouldn't freak out until you learn what your options are. And remember, they do this all the time so trust their experience.

I worked in bridal for three years, and I think I can ease your nerves! The way these kinds of hems typically work is that the lace at the bottom is actually a separate piece. If you flip the lace layer inside out, you will probably even be able to see it. The hem lace gets untacked/unsewn, the sheet lace (the rest of the lace) gets hemmed to the appropriate length along with the lining, and then the hem lace goes back on so you don't loose the pretty finished edge. This is very very common with lace dresses, I've seen these alterations a bunch of times. I hope I did an okay job of explaining it! Let me know if you have any other questions!

I was in the same boat! I had my illusion dress altered in January and just got to try it on last week. The straps, side panels, and part of the back are illusion (first three pics). I was so worried the illusion material would fray or she wouldn't be able to alter them at all. Luckily, she alters a lot of dance costumes so she sees illusion a lot! I only took one picture at the fitting, but hopefully it'll help calm your nerves a bit to see that the straps were taking up without any issues!
