Alterations and weight loss

Kansas , on March 29, 2018 at 10:18 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16
I'm taking my dress in today for alterations. My wedding day is June 7th. I've already lost 15 lbs since buying it in January. I've gone down one size, I might lose more weight so I'm concerned because of the lace on top they won't be able to get it done again if I do lose more weight.do you think I should just go see her again if I lose like 10 lbs in the next 6 weeks or go sooner? She told me you should try to maintain weight once alterations are being done. Is that something normal? Is it very time consuming and they need more than a week or two to pull in more lace if I lose more after the initial alterations?

You should try to maintain weight the best you can. Lace is so hard to work with when it comes to alterations. I have the same issue as you. I am normally 130 during the fall and winter months because I do not run as much and my eating habits go out the window, but I hype up my running once spring and summer come along and drop to about 122-124, but my legs get big with more muscle. I get fitted April 7th for a July wedding and I am going to try my best to maintain.

Your alterations person is correct. Once alterations begin, you really need to maintain the weight. Losing more weight means more work on the dress and that means more money because work that was done will have to be redone.

Oh wow okay. And I can't go get it altered like 1 month away? Or what if I tell her to pull in an extra like 1/2"?

I wouldn't tell her to pull in more than it needs to be before you have actually lost the weight. What if you dont lose the weight? The dress will be too small. You should do you best to maintain your weight once alterations begin.
No, you can't go a month before and ask her to pull it in more. Alterations on wedding dresses (especially with lace) are difficult and time consuming. Putting such pressure on her (I'm sure she's altering other dresses at the same time) leaves more room for error.

See what the drop dead time is for her to do alterations and wait until then. I am sure you have some time before she needs to start alterations. Once she does though you really need to try to maintain.

I'm pretty nervous about this, too. I've lost 25lbs since I got my dress, and my first fitting is this weekend. I wanted to order a smaller size, knowing I'd just hired a trainer and would be starting a strict fitness regimen, but the saleswomen at the store insisted I order the size that fit me at the time. They actually tried talking me into ordering an even larger size than that, but I refused.
I get it (they also want you to do alterations in-house, obviously) but I'm still concerned about how much work will have to be done. And I'm still going to be eating healthy and working out right up until the wedding, I'd actually like to lose another 10lbs, if possible.

What kind of back is on your dress? A zipper or buttons won't give you much leeway. My dress has a corset back and the consultant said I could safely gain or lose 5-10 pounds and it wouldn't be a big deal.

I'm wondering about this too. When I bought my dress in October it fit PERFECTLY and I've lost 10-15 lbs since then. I wasn't thinking about weight loss and wasn't planning for any alterations. I thought I'd just "tone up".

When I go today I'll ask her she can do fitting and start April 26th.if she says yes, than I'll make April 26th cutoff time on losing any weight and just go l in till than.if not because of how much work than u guess I'll maintain, I almost wish I just hadn't bought the dress in January but it's perfect and I didn't want the stress of looking for one closer in.

I lost 15 lb between picking up my dress and the wedding and had my alterations done halfway through that time period. All that happened is that my dress lay more flat, but I absolutely couldn't have done down a size.

Most likely, the dress will need to be take in b/c in most dresses, 10-15 lbs is at least one or two dress sizes. My dress had to be let out (although I let myself get talked into it by an aggressive tailor) and spent $600 on alterations. My friend who lost 15 lbs. b/w buying her dress and fitting spent $400 on alterations (getting it taken in), and it was still big. A tailor can generally take a dress in two dress sizes without major structural changes.
