Alteration nightmare!

Paige, on July 28, 2020 at 9:32 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24
I had my second fitting today and I feel like my dress is ruined. What I loved about my dress is the plunging neckline that was not overly revealing. She shortened my straps by making the torso shorter and, in doing so, has turned my dress into a v neck. I am so unhappy. There’s one month exactly until the wedding and I don’t know what to do. I sent her pictures of my original but I just don’t know how she could possibly fix this Alteration nightmare! 1

Would there be a way for the seamstress to adjust the straps from the back to still give that plunging neckline look ? It still looks beautiful either way

I have to talk to her more about it tomorrow. Here is a better comparison. The left is the neckline when I bought it and the right is now. She shorted the torso but she didn’t maintain the neckline. She just added the sheer fabric over the torso that she shortened. Can you see how the top is a “v” and goes into the straight line down and now the whole top is a “v” shape? Alteration nightmare! 3

So, did she shorten the straps just to bring the waist up? If so, could she let the straps back out and take the dress apart at the seam above the belt and shorten it there rather than at the shoulders? I'm sure it will be much more work and more costly, but I'd think that would bring the waist up without changing the neckline (but it may impact where the bustline of the dress hits you).

I definitely see the difference with the change she made. It looks great on you, but it is much more revealing. If that's not what you wanted, I can absolutely see how you're not comfortable/happy with the way it is now. You look awesome, but if you're not comfortable with that much cleavage showing it doesn't matter how great you look. Good luck! Smiley heart

So it all started with straps that were too long and instead of shortening the straps directly, she took off the bottom by the belt. So your solution is what she did to start. Maybe she can let the waist back out and shorten the straps instead? You can see how she pinned it in the first fitting here. I just am in a bit of a panic because I don’t know how she could possibly fix what she did. Alteration nightmare! 4

I'm trying to figure out how she changed the neckline so much -- like why did it get so much wider? Did she take it up at both the waist seam and in the shoulder seams? I'm so sorry.... Hopefully, she can rework the alterations. Thinking good thoughts for you! Smiley heart

It looks like she changed the contour of the neckline too...idk. It just looks so different.

In your opinion, should I start looking for a new dress or is this salvageable? My wedding is 30 days from today

It looks to me like the straps can be altered or let out if needed, but I’m not sure about the contour of the neckline. I would talk to your seamstress today to find out if it is salvageable and if not...go dress shopping STAT!

Looking at these pictures, I'm 99% sure that this is the exact same place that was going to be doing the alterations on my dress (or at least, it looks almost identical to that place). Do they seem confident that they can put the dress back to how it was? Or, are they able to create a new/custom top half of the dress (above the belt at the waist) that is the same design as the original and using the same/similar material? I think the new design still looks pretty on you, but if you're not comfortable in it, they should definitely do something to fix it. I'm so sorry that this didn't turn out the way you hoped!

I personally like how the v neck looks more, but if you are not comfortable with it I would have someone try and fix it.

Yea I have no idea how she ended up altering the neckline so much. There's clearly a much wider span of transparent mesh in the altered version than to begin with. If that was not part of what you discussed, you should absolutely return to the seamstress and explain your concern and ask if it can be resolved.

I understand the rest of the alterations, but the neckline just doesn't make sense to me.

Honestly, that looks like an entirely different neckline. Can you go back to the place you bought your dress from, and ask if they can rush order a new bodice/top half? Your seamstress should make things right by covering the cost, since they obviously screwed up with your alterations.

I think if she unpins the straps that she can cut the angle back in and have the straps sit toward the outside of your shoulder to salvage the dress. I would not consider it a lost cause - yet. Hang in there! Smiley heart You are gorgeous either way - but I get that the statement neckline means everything for your dress!

Yeah, I can see how she changed the neckline. It still looks good though.
Maybe she can add some lace to recreate an illusion like previous neckline, so that it is not so wide.
