Alteration help!

VICTORIA, on December 6, 2020 at 6:58 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

Hi Brides! Looking for some opinions and alterations help.

I bought a dress and then started having some doubts so I went back to the salon and found another dress that I like. I am still absolutely in LOVE with my first one, but I prefer the neckline of the secondary dress (the one with the more off the shoulder sleeves). I wanted to see what the rest of you think, which one you all think is more flattering- full disclosure I lost 10 points between when these photos were taken but couldn't get an updated photo of me in the original dress (boutique is under construction right now!). And I'm still working on losing more weight.

I do NOT like the longer train of the secondary dress- don't get me wrong, it's absolutely beautiful, but it's not just not for me. I think if I could get the neckline/sleeves of my original dress altered to be more like the second dress then it would be perfect. Have any of you had your necklines altered and was it an easy enough process? Am I overthinking this? Should I just buy the other dress? I love EVERYTHING about my original dress, except the neckline and straps- which is why I would love to get it altered to just lower the neckline and have the straps be more off the shoulder.

I'm rambling...I'm sorry. HELP!

That's something to discuss with a seamstress because they can tell you what is possible within their skill set and the dress you decide on.

Don't spend money on a new dress without selling the first, and you won't get the full value back unfortunately.
A seamstress should be able to remove the train and alter the neckline with no problem.

Definitely! I mean, I know it's *possible* because I've googled like crazy about it haha. I wouldn't want to shorten the train of the second dress because I genuinely think it's way to beautiful to take any of it away- I just don't don't want to deal with a train that long lol. I'm literally obsessed with my first dress, I just want the neckline and sleeves altered I guess. Idk, guess I'm just looking for other's opinions.

If you love the first dress then stick with it and get it altered to your preferences. You look amazing in both

You can alter your dress neckline. Less trouble with buying another dress 😉

So you think it's less trouble to just buy the other dress than get the first one's neckline/straps altered? I should also note that I'm using store credit either way. It would cost me absolutely NOTHING to alter the original dress to how I would want it. And it would cost me nothing to purchase the new dress- HOWEVER, if I purchase the new dress I would use up ALL my store credit and then I'd have to spend an additional $3-400 for THAT dress to be altered. It's been a very...interesting ordeal, to say the least -_-

You mean, can the straight set sleeves of top dress be made off the shoulders like dress 2? Definitely. The ones that come off might not be long enough, but if you have enough taken off for the hem, that material can be used, or the manufacturer will sell matching material, same as they sell swatches. .... Neckline - the main part of the bra cup, it would be a mistake to cut down, if you are going to offset sleeves.
But if you want the center 4-5 inches notched down in a curved V, or it you want a keyhole, those are easy. However, since you would lose the upper edging of the lave, you would have to be okay with an attractive embellishment with embroidery, or more likely an edging in seed pearls or crystal at the notch. ... A lot of dresses with a sweetheart curve come with a special edging there, so done right it would look like it was designed that way. This is easy, but the handwork putting on a new edging is time consuming. Quicker and easier than taking off the train then putting a new decorative edge where the train was, in the other dress. Same job, but the edge is shorter at the neckline, much easier. I say do the neck and sleeves. Hope your weight loss goes on, slow but steady. Go into marriage healthier. And what a great dress to show it off.

I meant, alter the dress you already purchase and use the credit store for something else. Veil? Bridesmaids dresses?

This is what I meant by a deeper notch in center. ut leaving the tops of the cups almost to armpit, so the side underarm and bra cup are high enough to support your bossom when the over the shoulder straps are removed and the offset cap sleeves are put on. Also, having the higher cups and offset sleeves will give you more of an hourglass than a neckline closer to the waist all around. Just the front notch that is deeper is best.

Okay! That's what I figured and got confused so I wanted to clarify haha. I think that also makes the most sense too- to use the store credit for for the alterations for the already purchased dress and maybe a veil! This way I can alter the dress to be as close to what I'm looking for as possible!

This is pretty much EXACTLY the notch that I'm looking for, maybe just a tad less deep- and exactly as you described with the tops of the cups at the armpits, etc. It's like you literally read my mind! I'm going to have to print this picture to bring to the alteration consultation!

I personally like the 2nd dress, but I agree with the others. You can keep the first one and ask the seamstress to alter it

Good. And it is a very common task. You might want to think about what you want the new edge trimmed with.

I had the 2nd dress and it is beautiful!! The dress also comes without the train. It's just a thought if the neckline doesn't come through on the first dress. David's Bridal will always show off the long train, veils, sleeve, etc. If you search thr DB website for cwg808, you will see the dress without the long train. Good luck!
