Alteration alternative?

Stefanie, on October 11, 2019 at 5:09 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 11

So, I'm the maid of honor in a wedding and we were allowed to pick our own dresses. I bought one off of poshmark for $35 and it fits almost perfect...but in six inch heels it is still just slightly too long. I would be like, "eh, when walking down the aisle I will just make sure to kick the dress as I walk..." But the wedding is outside so I'm a little concerned about that route.

I tried putting a crinoline under it, it is a mermaid cut so I figured it would help it anyways, but it's just too much. Does anyone have a cheap alternative to paying a seamstress for such a small thing?

I was thinking of just...hand sewing it myself - there isn't dancing at this wedding so I could just do an inch or so in the front and the back should be fine. I also thought about fabric glue; the skirt is lace so if it isn't completely smooth I don't believe it'll really show up.

I really cannot thing of any alterative to hemming a dress. I think my last BM dress cost around $30 and it was almost a foot too long on me, but obviously it depends on the material and number of layers. Could you budget for it sometime between now and January?

Double sided fabric tape! I’ve used it many times to hem a dress last minute.

I agree with Kelly. Unless you have sewing experience, especially with lace, I would just try fabric tape.

This is the dress; I even think the under layer is just fine, but the lace...has to be a tiny bit shorter.

That doesn't look like it would be an expensive hem job, but I definitely wouldn't trust lace to be held up by fabric tape. You could always ask around for a seamstress on a local Facebook page or similar? Especially if you're not normally comfortable in six-inch heels, not hemming sounds like a recipe for disaster.

Girl, I know it sucks but just fork over the money for the hem. Take it from a short little lady who ALWAYS needs a hem 😅 Pro tip: You might even make a post on social media and ask if anyone knows how to do it for free or if someone has a sewing machine you could borrow. Hems aren’t difficult to do, just make sure you have an extra set of hands to pin the length correctly.

Oh, and that dress fits you like a glove. You look gorgeous 😍

I would look into having it hemmed, I really don’t think it would be that much. But if that’s not possible you could try fuse tape. You iron it to fuse the fabric.

Reverse the roles here for a minute. I get it, it’s not your wedding and it seems like such a small thing, but a two layer dress shouldn’t be that expensive to hem. Is it truly worth possibly tripping down the aisle (I would hate to be the star of that viral video!) or looking sloppy in your best friend’s wedding photos?

Oh no I absolutely wanted to have it hemmed; I tried wearing my shoes that I had for the dress to a different event for practice and went, "nope, these are NOT going to work," and with those shoes the dress was the right length...with more reasonable shoes it was not. But I was in a time crunch to find a seamstress who could do it in the right amount of time. I ended up using fabric tape and it worked - I wished I had been able to have someone alter it professionally cause I did have to be really careful - but no falls and it looked beautiful. I got a ton of compliments on the dress.

It looks gorgeous on you! Just curious, but what kind of reception did your friend have where there's no dancing?

It is a little unusual today not have dancing at a reception, but it was a great day and the focus was them getting married. Dances are fun, but it didn't really suit them - the groom doesn't like being the center of attention and doesn't really dance, and he would have gotten out there for her, but she didn't want their wedding to be something where he wasn't enjoying himself too, so they just didn't have a dance...and all the guests were just happy to be there to see them get married, and they got some delicious food.

And they saved the money for the dance floor - put it towards the honeymoon ;-)
