Almonds at Weddings - Do they have to be sugar coated?

Elizabeth, on July 23, 2013 at 8:56 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

Apparently I need to have almonds at the wedding since it's going to a BFGW. Do they have to be candy coated? FH and I are not fans of all the chemicals they put in the coatings so I'm having a hard time making this part of the wedding since it's representative of us. Are any Italian or Greek brides doing this? What are your thoughts on having plain almonds? I don't want to go against tradition but I also don't want do something just to appease everyone else.

I don't see why you need almonds at all, but if you have them, I don't think you need to have them coated.

Unfortanetly FH's entire family will notice. There isn't an event where they don't have almonds. I'm looking into some sort of organic chocolate coating as a compromise.

If they will make that big of a deal then I would go traditional and just get the regular ones... Why spend so much more for something you aren't even in to?

I went to a greek wedding in Dec and the grooms mother made all the desserts and the almonds. They were incredible! Would it be possible to make them instead of buying them? Or what about almond cookies?

Check a whole foods store if you are worried about chemicals or make them yourself.

Thanks for the recipe. I doubt I'll have time, but if I do I'd prefer to make them myself.

Jordan Almonds are a tradition at all the weddings in my Italian family. They are always wrapped in fives. They symbolize the 5 wishes for the bride and groom: health, wealth, happiness, fertility and longevity.

There's a reason why the almonds are sugarcoated. Plain almonds are considered to have a bittersweet taste. Adding a sugarcoating to it is supposed to add sweetness to the bride and groom and that their life together is more sweet than bitter. So for tradition alone they have to be sugarcoated.

They're not our favorite thing either but it's not a tradition we're willing to break. :-)

I just read that also about the sugar symbolizing the sweetness. It's funny that they are a part of Italian, Greek and Middle Eastern weddings but each have a different meaning. For the Greek wedding, we're supposed to include an odd number 3, 5, 7 b/c that is indivisible so that FH and I will remain undivided.

How about just have natural almonds for you and hubby and the others for the rest of the guests?

Jordan almonds are gross, but maybe you can do dark chocolate covered almonds, or another covered almonds?

I'm waiting to hear back on one place that does an organic coconut white chocolate covered almond. If that doesn't work, I might go with dark.

I am also doing Jordon almonds. I agree with Jac-Jac Attack. They are a tradition for Italian weddings. All of my relatives have had them. I am only having them as a traditional element, not because I personally like them or think anyone else does. They are also an inexpensive favor option. I got 5 lbs. on Diamond Almonds website for $26. That will make approx. 160 favors with 5 almonds in them.
