Allow David's Bridal to ship altered dress because of coronavirus?

Dana, on March 27, 2020 at 2:02 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

Hi ladies! I figured I'd see what your thoughts are on this to help me make a decision.

I bought my dress at David's Bridal and had my alterations appointment earlier in the month. I was supposed to have my appointment to try on the altered dress and pick it up this week, though obviously not now with all non-essential businesses closed. The David's Bridal where I bought my dress contacted me and asked about sending it to my house for free.

I am torn, because there is a part of me that would like to have my dress back. Even though we won't be having the wedding we originally planned in early May I'm still planning to wear it when we go to the courthouse whenever it's opened back up. But there is a part of me that is concerned that there might be something wrong/incomplete with the alterations. And the lady in alterations was going to show my bridesmaid how to do up the bustle, and if it's sent to me I'd need to figure that out on my own. Plus since everything non-essential is shut down it's not like they really need the space in the back of the store for new dresses right now.

So should I have them send me the dress, or wait until things get back to normal and go get it from the store myself? What would you do?

I'm having them ship mine, but I just wanted it with me instead of hanging out in their backroom. I also had a lot of bad experiences with the alterations, so I wouldn't mind not seeing them again lol. A bustle shouldn't be too bad - YouTube it and see if anyone has filmed putting the bustle for your dress up. I know with mine they said there was basically only way to bustle.

I would reschedule to see the dress with alterations unless planning to get married and need the dress before hand.
I am having David’s change my complete bust line though- so I would def want to see before Picking up.

Yeah, that's a good point. The seamstress who did my first appointment seemed good, but you never know

Yeah, I know what you mean about just wanting it with you - I'm having similar thoughts. My bustle might be a bit more complicated than a regular one. The top layer is lace, and I think it's the standard pick up bustle, but the lower layer is satin and that layer is bustled up under the dress. So maybe it's not more complicated but more effort to do it

Oh I also forgot to mention: our venue day of coordinator said she would have no trouble helping with the bustle, so you may want to check with them too. I personally wouldn't leave it with their alterations department, but I think their business is just going to get more chaotic after they open again. And before I could barely get seen! I would take the monetary loss and go find another seamstress if something doesn't look right. I really don't have much faith in them, but she had me devolve into tears three weeks before my wedding by implying I had gained weight soooo

That's true Kathryn, I'm worried it'll be pretty chaotic there once things re-open. And we decided to just go to the courthouse once it's back open (likely at least a couple weeks after our original date) so I don't want to be stuck waiting for my dress...
Fortunately my local David's Bridal had pretty good reviews for their alterations department, including the woman I met with. So I'm optimistic about that, just concerned there might be something I'm not thinking of that's wrong. And my dress is a corset back, so it's hard to try on my myself to make sure it looks good (I could ask FH to help since we live together, but I'd rather try and get a first look if we can)
Thanks for the comments so far ladies!

They made me come pick mine up and I am furious with the work that was done! The store was closed by the time I tried my dress on when I got home and they don't know when they'll be reopening. Wedding is 6 weeks away. They have a lot of fixing to do and I don't think they even got my dressed finished with taking it in, doesn't look started? Best of luck to you. I hope you have a better experience with whichever you decide!

That's awful Serena! I hope you're able to get the alterations completed in time!

And that's my concern, since the stores here have been closed a couple weeks already - if they started on my dress right away it might be completely altered, but it might not be

Thank you! How long have they had your dress? They had mine for 5 weeks or so and the work that was "completed" looks rushed. Very half a**ed. If you go to my profile and look at photos, I have them posted.

The really frustrating thing like you've discussed with others. I read thousands of google reviews and yelp and the lady I got was the one everyone recommended. During my fitting she seemed amazing! She knew what she was talking about. So the results are so disappointing. I expected better.

My first alterations appointment was Feb 26th, so just over 4 weeks. They needed to hem mine, take in the hips/waist, and bustle it, so a few different things. And any of which could've taken longer than the time they had before it closed.

I looked at your pictures and post, that's so awful what they did! Yours was definitely not completed! Planning a wedding caen be stressful enough, then through a pandemic on it and it's even worse, then to have your dress like that... I'm so sorry, and hope you get some type of refund.

Here's an update - I texted the store manager back, asking to confirm my alterations are complete. She said they're only shipping the finished dresses, so I decided to risk it and sent her my address. My dress was shipped on Monday and I received it yesterday.

From what I can tell, it looks like all the alterations were completed. It was shortened and the bustle completed. They even left little gold safety pins next to the hooks in the back so I could find them in the lace (that might be standard? this is my first and hopefully only wedding dress Smiley laugh ). My dress has a corset back, and FH and I are the only ones who live here so I wasn't able to do it up completely to make sure it was taken in properly at the waist (I want to surprise him still). I held it with my hands and it looks like it was

I feel some relief knowing my dress is back with me, even though we don't know when we'll get married at this point with the coronavirus. Thanks for all your comments, ladies! And good luck with your wedding dresses too!

ETA: I was surprised it wasn't even that wrinkled from being shipped! I figured I'd need to get it steamed before we get married. The dress bag looked way worse, though that could be because the dress is mostly lace.
