Alcohol

Hi 👋🏼
When I was searching for a wedding venue, one of my top priorities was to find a venue that allowed me to supply the beer/ wine on my own, in hopes that it would save me some money. As time as gone on, I’ve started to entertain the idea of having a few pre-made cocktails available at the bar. However this would require me to hire an outside bartender as the venues bartender does not have a liquor license.
Is it possible/ legal to hire a bartender and still be able to supply my own beer and wine? If so, how would I go about finding one? I am in the NW Indiana/ Chicago region.

That's a question for your venue. From the hosting standpoint, beer, wine and soft drinks are fine. Some couples do like to have a special cocktail as well, but that's optional.

That strikes me as a huge red flag that the venue has a bartender on the payroll but they don’t have their own license? Talk to the venue to see what is allowed. Thumbtack.com and eventective.com have staffing recommendations.

I would just have the guests bring their own alcohol and serve self-serve- a BYOB.

That may be fine at a backyard barbecue, it is considered poor hosting at a wedding. Most venues do not allow guests to bring their own alcohol for liability reasons and you as the host will be served with heavy fines and the wedding possibly shut down immediately.

Talk to your venue and your caterer. While my venue is a cidery they required a separate bartender, which my caterer is providing. We are providing the alcohol to the caterer.
