Alcohol registry

Chivy, on June 13, 2017 at 9:32 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 30

So i found out there is an alcohol registry site to help you start/stock your home bar. What are your thoughts? I think that's actually a cool idea. And more useful than most things.

I mean if that's what you want go for it. I assume then most of these gifts will be sent or for pick up? I can't imagine people bringing that much booze as a gift to the wedding. And it's heavy,

I heard about someone doing this recently. The wines on the registry were on the pricier side ($300+/bottle) and it was meant to go into their wine cellar.

I think it would be a fun thing to have guests bring to a shower! Back in the day people used to have wishing wells...I would much prefer a bar stocking.

I have been to a "stock the bar" party, I loved it. It was more for the groom than the bride, a good time was had by all.

I don't think this is as offensive as you thought. Stock the bar parties are pretty common. As long as you don't turn around as use it for the wedding its fine

Stock the bar showers are a pretty common theme for couples showers, because it is something both friend groups can enjoy. If making a registry for a shower like that, then I don't see any issue with it. Also, this alcohol would be considered gifts for personal use, future entertaining....not for the bar at the wedding.

I think it's fine in lieu of a traditional shower.

We were actually gifted some bottles of wine from one of DH's suppliers at work, and we received some expensive bottles of brandy and/or whiskey along with our wedding presents.

I personally much more enjoyed the presents that we could use in our home (and the cash - ahem), but I know DH is thrilled with the brandy / whiskey, and I am steadily making my way through the wine.

@Keisha, I never thought it was offensive....

When you have a stock the bar party, are people expected to do that AND buy a gift from your registry?

@Chivy..this sort of depends where you are located... Where I live, its common for people to give one gift, at either a shower OR the wedding. However in many part of the country, people give both a shower and wedding gift.

So if I were hosting a stock the bar and someone bought a $10 bottle of wine, then yes id think that they would likely give another gift either at another shower or the wedding...but say they bought a $80-100 bottle of burbon, then no...I would assume that was the only gift id get from them.

Isn't STOCK THE BAR the same as some JACK and JILL party?

I'm never a fan of those fundraising things...

And Stock the Bar is very different than Alcohol Registry. One is meant to be a gift, the second is a to be used for the wedding/party.

I'm all for giving people booze that they like and enjoy. I've received too many bottles of random stuff that we won't drink and have to try to give away. How can I possibly get my twerk on if I'm not feeling the booze?! I'd give from a registry for that.

@VC To me a Jack and Jill is a coed shower. A stag and doe is a fundraiser. They do use the two terms interchangeably so it is confusing

I have nothing against a stock the bar party. I mostly see them as a dual event with a house warming party.

I don't really see this as being any different than a "pounding," where guests bring a pound of flour, sugar, butter, etc., to stock a couple's pantry or fridge. These are not super common anymore, but it's essentially the same concept.

I think you just have to be careful who you invite. There is something of a friendship culture around wine, beer, whiskey, etc. Usually people who are really into wine or craft beer or scotch have a group of friends who share that interest and do wine clubs and brewery/distillery tours with them. A "stock the bar" shower is a very different thing for that group than for those who aren't "hobbyists" when it comes to alcohol. Many non-drinkers (particularly older ones) don't tend to understand the concept of giving alcohol as a gift.

This is up my alley and we're thinking about it. For stocking our home bar FH made, not our wedding bar lol.

I'm not a fan of registering for consumables, so i would never partake personally, but i guess a bottle of something in addition to something else might be ok
