Alcohol choices

Emma, on September 2, 2020 at 4:37 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 20
My FH has chosen to do Guinness and blue moon for beer. I don’t drink beer, are these good options? I was planning on doing a white muscato and a red Muscato for wine. Is one red and one white enough? Most of the people on my list don’t really drink wine. For cocktails FH wants to do an old fashioned, we are going to have Long Islands and idk what I’m picking yet but I know it will be fruity. Should we have more cocktail options? If so, what should they be?

For your beer choices, I personally think both are too 'specialty'. It's common to do a regular beet, light beer and a specialty beer to give your guests options.

For your wine choices, moscato is a sweet wine, regardless of color (I love it, personally!). But it's common to do a red and white, or one sweet and one tart-ish.

For your cocktails, I think what you have is great are signature drink options.

As a bartender I think Guinness and Blue Moon are good because you have a dark and a more light beer. In regards to wine, I wouldn’t do two sweet wines. Maybe a white moscato and A Cabernet. It’s a sweet/white and red/dryer. Some people Do not like sweet wines and may have to settle for something else. I’d definitely think back to your guests. An old fashioned is a very particular drink that not everyone may like. But again, you know your guests! Do you like coconut rum? A Malibu bay breeze may be a nice fruity option for you! It’s Malibu rum (or any coconut rum), pineapple and cranberry juice. It’s very refreshing and always a crowd favorite in my opinion. Also, anything with vodka can be generic, and a crowd pleaser, you just need mixers. I would suggest cranberry juice, pineapple juice, lemonade and orange juice (screw driver). If you did a Malibu bay breeze you would have these mixers already! I also recommend gin and tonic! Sorry for the overload!

For your cocktails, do something like a blue hawaiian or pina colada for a fruity drink. Otherwise that is a good selection that should cover all tastes if you are planning to keep choices to a minimum.

I don't know any wine drinkers so can't say for sure but typically one red and one white is standard.
Your beer choices are fine to cover most people. Maybe a Corona for the more mainstream.
If in doubt, poll your VIPs (friends/family) who will be attending as to what they like, since every group is different.

Thank you so much! I will definitely have to ask my bartender about a dry red since I don’t like them 😂 that cocktail sounds delicious except for the Coconut😂

I would suggest a light typical beer. Those 2 you listed are are pretty specific. And I'm an avid beer drinker.

I think the beer choices are fine (one dark, one light; both are mega-brands and not "specialty" at all). For the wine, I definitely suggest having at least one non-sweet wine. And same for your cocktails, if you are only offering a few cocktails; have one non-sweet option like a martini, gin & tonic, or vodka & soda.

I think the beers are fine, but as others mentioned, I'd add something less sweet, maybe a pinot noir and a chardonnay? I'd also recommend adding some prosecco or champagne. A lot of people will want to toast with something sparkling. I know Moscato is technically sparkling, but it's not very sparkly. For the cocktails, in addition to the sweet ones and the ones you mentioned, I'd also add something a little bit lighter, like mojitos (if you have a fast/patient bartender) or gin and tonics.

Long islands have several different liquors in them. I would stick to something with only one type of alcohol in it like rum. It will be cheaper to do it that way. I agree with a beer comment, those two are great but I would throw in a light beer like Michelob ultra or Bud Light. Long islands have several different liquors in them. Also guests can toast with whatever they are already drinking. Unless the majority of your guests are wine drinkers of any sort, champagne and its substitutes often go to waste.

The easiest rule of thumb is a regular beer and light beer. White and Red wine (I would steer clear of sweet wines). Liquor dark and clear; most common choice is Vodka and Whiskey

Now, no one knows your guests better than the two of you. What do people normally drink? If you know more specifics, I’d focus on those types of alcohol

I would go with a pinot noir, chardonnay, and a moscato di asti (sparkling Moscato). One red, one white, one dessert.

If add a more widely accepted beer, bud, bud light, coors, Miller etc.
also I love sweet wine and won’t drink a drier one, as do many of the people I know. So I’d keep that and then a drier red and/or white. Pino Noir and Chardonnay are popular ones.
We had long islands and rum punch as our cocktails, and everyone LOVED the rum punch. We ran out so fast. You can use coconut rum or not

Agree with above that everything on this list caters to pretty specific tastes- personally I drink beer, wine, and liquor but would struggle to find something to drink here.
My suggestion is to add a basic light beer (bud light, Miller lite, coors) - a bonus is that these should be a cheaper than your options. Also definitely add a non-sweet wine. Many Moscatos are dessert wines, and even those that aren’t are known for sweet and fruity flavors- which is very polarizing and will pair well with only certain foods.
Lastly, you can’t go wrong with a basic mixed drink- Vodka/Rum/whisky and club soda / Coke. This may be cheap/easy to do if you use the same base liquor as the specialty drinks and just buy extra mixer variety.

Passionfruit rum is great in that drink too. You can also substitute OJ for the pineapple and have a "madras"

I think the beers are good because blue moon is a more mild beer, as my mom would call it, "easy drinking beer" I think with the wine you may want to consider something else. Moscato is very sweet so maybe do a white moscato and a red blend or a chardonnay and a red moscato just to allow a little variety there. A sangria may be a good option for a fruity cocktail. FH are doing a sparkling peach sangria, we're making a big batch the night before the wedding and will add champagne right before for the sparkling part

Those sounds great to me! Honestly, your guests will drink whatever you give them. I had a gin and tonic for the first time at a wedding and now they're my favourite. You have a wide enough variety that people should be pleased Smiley smile

I would also be a little concerned with the sobriety of your guests if you serve long islands, those sneak up on you hard!

I would strongly suggest steering clear of moscato. Go with a pinot noir or cabernet for red and a chardonnay or other non-sweet white for white.

I agree with pretty much everyone here. I drink everything (beer, wine, liquor) and if I was a guest I wouldn't be really happy with any of those options. I would suggest adding a light beer to your beer options and instead of the moscatos do a non-sweet red and white wine and then you can have a sweet sparkling wine. Generally sweeter wines are dessert wines and not something you want to drink with regular food. Also for cocktails Long Island Iced Teas require a TON of different alcohol and mixers which can be quite expensive . You can't go wrong with a simple cocktail like a vodka tonic or club soda.
