Alcohol brand suggestions

Ash7898, on June 10, 2016 at 1:22 PM Posted in Planning 0 23

I'm trying to plan my modified full bar, and I need suggestions on inexpensive brands for the following items: red wine, white wine, light beer, dark beer, gin, vodka, whiskey. We plan to have meatloaf and baked chicken entrees.

What kinds do you, FH, and your guests like? We are going to be getting brands we like and that are pretty popular in our area. If other people don't like them they don't have to drink them.

Go to Costco, they have great prices and good brands. (Sorry, I don't have any specific brand suggestions)

Our families are from the southeast. And I just turned 21 in March, so I have no idea what brands I like. My go-to is Barefoot Pink Spritzer, lol.

For the wines, Trader Joe's tends to have some pretty good, inexpensive options that you can buy by the case. I haven't shopped there in a while, but I really liked one of their Pinot Noir's. I think the brand was called "Blue Fin" or something, and it was less than $5 per bottle.

For beer, Bud Light and Yuengling are probably two good options.

I'm less opinionated on the liquor options since I don't really drink gin or vodka.

I don't really drink liquors much so I'm no help there. I always hear Yuengling is good but it's not sold everywhere.

For wines - if your bartender can use decanters, it's a good cost savings to buy boxed wine and then just serve out of decanters. Bota Box and Black Box are good brands. You'll want either a Cabernet or a Merlot for red, and Chardonnay or Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio for white. If you have a lot of guests around your age, a sweeter wine like a Moscato or White Zin would be good too.

Monopolowa is a potato vodka and is under $20 a bottle (in Texas at least). It is actually really good. Even though it is inexpensive, it doesn't give you the "cheap vodka" hangover like McCormicks and the other "cheap" ones

    $20 a handle actually

We did Trader Joe's red and white wines. We also did Skyy Vodka, Stella for Light beer and Laguanitas and Stone IPA for a heavier beer. I can't help with whiskey or gin though since we didn't have any.

If you go to any reputable liquor store, they can help you find the types of alcohol your looking for and can give you good prices - for example, we wanted to do beer, wine and three signature cocktails for our wedding. We went to a local liquor store that helped us pick out varieties of white and red wines, buy cases of wine, and fairly inexpensive liquor (since they were going to be mixed drinks) and gave us discounts on everything. On top of all that, we got rebates on nearly everything we got.

As an added bonus, we had a leftover case of white white after the wedding. The liquor store took it back and refunded us the money.

How inexpensive on the liquor? If you need to go below $20 a handle, New Amsterdam is the most drinkable of the gins. Vodka, if you can swing $20ish a handle, I highly recommend Blue Ice (potato, not grain). My dad and I did a blind taste test of 10 vodkas, including Grey Goose, Ketel, all the $$ ones, and Blue Ice won hands down for both of us. And I think potato vodkas give you less of a hangover! If nothing else, buy the cheapest booze that comes in glass. Anything in a plastic handle is the step too far and hangover-city!

Red wines- Chilean wines are inexpensive and yummy. Frontera is a great inexpensive red. For white, cheap pinot grigio and sauvingon blanc are a lot more palatable than cheap chardonnay, which tastes like movie theater butter. I loooove Monkey Bay sauvingon blanc, which you can find as low as $7 a bottle.

If you absolutely have to go way cheaper and serve boxed wine or Carlo Rossi, pour it in decanters. I've been to weddings that served both, and thought it would have made a world of difference if they poured it out of a decanter rather than pushing the little button on the box.

We are providing our own liquor and I price-shopped and saved a ton of money. One big store would be $10 cheaper on the rum but $10 more expensive on the whiskey. I watched sales for several months and ended up buying the booze piece meal all over the city and saved a ton.

Skyy stoli and absolute are good middle of the road brands of vodka. Tanqauray or beefeaters for gin. Jim Beam or Jack Daniels for whiskey. You can do bud lite, coors lite miller lite I would skip the dark beer. I personally like Barefoot for wine, it's affordable and pretty tasty.

Gnarly Head Cab drinks like a more expensive red but at the grocery store is about $9/bottle. Not sure about the case price but I'm certain it goes down. Tanqueray makes an awesome vodka that is cheap. In VA it's $26/handle. I was a strict Grey Goose drinker until my FH introduced me to it. Also, Costco brand vodka is made where Grey Goose is made. I can't tell the difference at all.

Gin, bombay sapphire is top shelf, then Tanqueray, then Beefeaters. Anything else tastes like shit IMO.

Are you near any vineyards? If so call them up usually for weddings they will give you a discount on cases. Titos vodka is a great vodka but it's around 35ish a handle. I would ask your parents what they like to drink, or your bartender what they usually serve at different price points. They should be able to help you pick it liquor. As far as beer goes you can never go wrong with bud light, Miller light, or Michelob ultra. Darker beer try Shiner

FH is a bartender. He says at weddings, people will probably want more vodka based cocktails the most so buy accordingly. These are his recommendations for the hard alcohol:

    Gin - Hendricks

    Vodka - Titos

    Whiskey - Bulleit Burbon
