Aisle Runner-60" wide: Need suggestions!

Beth, on March 13, 2010 at 11:10 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

We are having an outdoor ceremony and luckily the site has a cement aisle, but it looks like it would be very hard to keep clean, so I am looking to do an aisle runner. The only problem is that the aisle is 60" wide. I have looked online and found some 60" wide aisle runners, but they are all $250 which is way too much IMO for an aisle runner. Do you gals know of any place to get an aisle runner of this width that is not expensive? The other thought I had was to purchase some semi-nice fabric and have my mom make one (but I don't want to give her too much to do as she is helping to make a lot of other things). Any suggestions would help!

They have aisle runners at acmoore. i dont know how wide they are but u might be able to sew 2 together... if its not wide enough you can always decorate either side with roses or something. i think that always looks pretty

I thought of the flower thing, but there will be a foot on either side of the aisle runner (standard aisle runner is 36"). I was also planning to do flower petals in the grass between the chairs on the end and the aisle, but I don't want there to be too many flower petals.

How long do you need it? Home decor fabrics come in wider widths only down fall is that they come with certain lengths on the bolts.

The aisle is about 40' long, so maybe about 45' just so it's not too short.

I would think that the fabric would be your best bet. Also, you could look for fabrics that have a nice selvage edge [the way it comes on the bolt] so you wouldn't need to sew the long sides--just the short edges, which isn't too terribly time consuming. And if you don't want to pull out the sewing machine you can buy steam-a-seam type products at sewing & craft stores that only require an iron to set. The heavy duty stuff is quite sturdy.

You could choose a nice style of pot and line the sides of the aisle with potted plants/flowers. There are some very nice pots you can get for a good price, seeds are cheap... if you have a family member with a green thumb they can care for them... Then you can give the flowerpots away as gifts after the wedding.

This would add gorgeous decorations to line the outside edges of your aisle and use up that extra space nicely.

I think you could find fabric and hem it. Alot that I am looking have 25 yards thats 75 feet on a bolt by 60 inches. The edges could be covered with your petals so no selvages show. Just make sure the fabric is not slippery simple cotton/poly would work and quilting stores and some fabric stores that have quilting supplies have it in 60 in widths.

The aisle at our ceremony venue is 60 inches wide as well. I didn't want to use one of the cheap looking ones they sell at the local craft stores plus I wanted one a bit wider to accomodate the aisle. So I went to Joann's and bought a bolt of bleached muslin fabric. I am going to monogram it and put black ribbon on the edges to conceal the edges. It has a selvage but I think the ribbon will give it a more polished look. This is an easier option than trying to hem it b/c the aisle is almost 75 ft and I don't want to do all that sewing!

Forgot to add the muslin fabric is 54 inches wide. And using a coupon it costed a little over $20.

Be careful with outdoor runners. I have had trouble with the wind getting under them and billowing up like a sail! I had a bride put small stones on hers, thinking it would hold it down, and it just flung the stones around.

If you don't need to cover the entire 60" we have runners that are 44" wide and come in either white or ivory and in any length. I'd love to discuss your aisle runner options with you! www.aislesbydesign.net
