Airline miles as wedding gift?

junipercrown55, on April 27, 2014 at 10:47 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4

My best friend is getting married soon, and will then be moving several states away for her DH's job. She is really close to her family and I think is upset about the possibility of being so far away (definitely farther than driving distance). Is there a way that I could give her airline miles or a flight gift card or something like that as a gift? Is there a way to gift something like that? I am hoping maybe it would be easier for her to know she can come home at least once without worrying about expensive plane tickets. Has anyone done this before as a gift?

I wouldn't do miles because you seriously need SO MANY miles to book a flight.

However, most airlines sell gift cards. I know southwest gift cards are even sold in the grocery store near my house.

Are you looking to buy miles for her or give her some of yours? You should be able to donate so e of your miles, but purchasing miles is quite expensive. It would be better to purchase a gift card.

If you're transferring / gifting your miles there's a fee for that too. And it's hard to book a flight with miles. I'd buy a gift certificate. I think that's a really thoughtful gift.

I've done it many times. There is a small fee to gift miles, at least on United and American. It is NOT difficult to book a flight with miles - but you may need to book it well in advance. Be sure to change the name on the ticket to the other person if you're booking online; it's easy to overlook and a pain in the butt to change. Good luck.
