Air Conditioning for nh Barn in August?

MrsParkCity, on February 19, 2018 at 2:51 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

My question is... should I rent air conditioning for the barn? I'm asking for the etiquette here for summer wedding protocol.

By air conditioning, I mean a 20 ton unit that sits outside the barn and is connected via duct, as opposed to several small AC units within the barn.

Details:
- Early August date at a farm in southern NH.
- Most likely 2PM ceremony invite time.
- 2 years ago it was 84 degrees at 2PM with 32% humidity
- 1 year ago it was 87 degrees at 2PM with 43% humidity
- Ceremony will be outdoors in a field, and although it'll be a short 20 mins the spot is still in the sun with a 3 min walk to it. (FYI I'm already looking into all the heat helpers: parasols vs umbrellas, fans, water, sunscreen, etc. There's also an alternative ceremony spot in front of apple trees for extreme hot weather.)
- If the barn is air conditioned, I'll probably have the main cocktail area space located inside, but there's a small bar outside the barn that I could utilize as well (weather-depending). The space doesn't have much shade but I'll probably put umbrellas there, etc, to help if I use it.

Have any of you done this similarly?
Do any of you wish you did this?
Did any of you do this and regret it?

Please advise!

Yes yes and again yes on the A/C in August. Be prepared, get the A/C.

You absolutely need AC. 2pm in the middle of August can be in the 90s and the humidity can be very high. If I sat outside, even for 20 minutes, I’d be drenched in sweat and my hair would be a mess.

Please get air conditioning. I'm sure your guests would greatly appreciate it especially after sitting out in the hot sun for a half hour for your ceremony.

Definitely get the AC. It will be very uncomfortable without it. Not only for your guests, but you as well. Your FH I'm assuming wil be wearing a suit jacket and you will be in what is probably an expensive dress.

I want to add (I can't edit) we did go to a wedding on July 4th with no A/C. It was miserable. Hot, humid, just yuck. Two years ago it was 84, one year ago it was 87, this year it could be 97 or it could be 77 - you don't know. Get the A/C and be prepared.

When I was little I was a flower girl in a church wedding with no A/C and when the sun hit through the stained glass....two bridemaids almost passed out, they had to sit in the front and someone brought water.

Honestly... If I knew these details about your wedding beforehand and I was invited, I would decline.
AC Is a must - not being outside in the sun in the middle of the day and high heat and humidity is a must.

Please reconsider your wedding plans - If YOU want to get married in that, thats fine, but don't make your guests suffer through that - TBH I'd be pissed

Yes. NH in August is typically 80+. Far too hot for your guests to enjoy themselves without air conditioning.

Please get AC! What your describing sounds like people get heat stroke/heat sickness and passing out.

Having grown up in New England and lived here my entire life, be prepared for anything. Our weather is very fickle and I always joke with those not from around here that they should always pack for all four seasons no matter when they are visiting.

August is very, very warm, especially with the humidity. Please either invest in the A/C or see if you could find another option for your wedding. I would absolutely not sit in the sun, in the middle of August for a 20 minute ceremony. Not even for anyone I love dearly. I get faint very easily.

Thank you all for your comments. I 100% agree that you can't do an outdoors August wedding without some form of AC in a building. You've all helped me to finally decide that an August wedding is not for us, because the cost of AC for the barn is just not in our budget (another $3k).

    Thanks again.

I'm relieved that you've realized the AC for a barn is prohibitive.

I honestly don't like the idea of a 2 p.m. wedding in August, even with AC, anywhere. It's bound to be hot and sticky, even just outside, walking between buildings, etc... Ugh. At 2 p.m. in August, I want to be napping in a hammock, or inside, or in a swimming pool.

    How about 5 pm. instead?
