Afternoon Reception (alternatives to dancing)

Nemo, on August 29, 2017 at 11:32 AM Posted in Planning 0 9

FH and I are not big dancers, and neither are any of our friends/family. In addition to them not being big dancers, most of our friends do not know each other so we're concerned the dance floor would be empty. We're looking at a 2:30-3:30 cocktail hour followed by a 3:30-6:30 reception. We would have an open bar and great food, but we're concerned about not properly entertaining our guests. We will have a DJ regardless (mostly for background music), but I would hate to have a dance floor and have nobody dance. I was curious if anyone else has had this same issue or any suggestions? There is a reception venue we are waiting to hear back from that has bocce/bowling which we think would be a blast, but we are looking for a backup plan if that ends up not working out/being out of our budget.

You could do trivia, how well do the guests know the bride and groom and give out prizes. You could do the shoe game as well.

We had a nice relaxed dinner, and everyone told us that they loved it! . We used the background music from the restaurant. It was an extended cocktail hour (2 hours with apps), then diner and cake.

@Ashley, I just saw the shoe game on Facebook the other day and loved it! I didn't even think about that. Thank you! I'll run it by FH and see what he thinks.

@JustKidding, we had thought about doing something like that too. I was concerned about people being dressed up in fancy clothes, but the way your friend did it makes more sense.

@Z_Runner, We love the idea of an extended cocktail hour too, I feel like it would be a great way to fill the time. Our main concern was just not having enough "stuff," but we're planning on doing a photobooth which would be a lot of fun. Did you do a DJ?

I don't think games are necessary. If you have enough food and alcohol and some background music, that is plenty for an afternoon reception.

I had an afternoon wedding (ceremony at 11am, reception ended by 4:00pm). Like you, I had a DJ, but no one danced. I did no spotlight dancing. Honestly, people still had a great time (from what i've heard, they could be lying). People enjoyed socializing. I did have kids at the wedding, and they did run around like crazy on the dance floor.

I don't think games are necessary. I poured a lot of heart and thought into my seating chart, and I really think good company won over forcing some sort of entertainment on them

I don't think you really have to worry about it, honestly. Good food, good music and drinks; it'll be lovely.

Guys, this made me feel a million times better. We were really stressing out about feeling like bad hosts for not having a massive dance party, even though our friends aren't big dancers anyway. I actually really love the idea of a jazz pianist, I'll have to bring that idea up to FH since he wasn't super keen on having a DJ.

We did NOT had a DJ. People mingled and caught up- some people haven't seeing each other in 5 years. We had a full (top shelf) open bar, but no games or anything like that...

ETA: I did spend days on the seating chart...
