Advice for mowing lawn for ceremony site

Kari, on May 21, 2020 at 10:32 AM Posted in Planning 1 7

This is a weird wedding planning question, but Covid-19 is forcing us all to plan differently. We are doing a mini ceremony on our original date and planning to do a bigger wedding ceremony and reception next year, so I will be wearing my dress twice. Our mini-ceremony will need to be outside for social distancing reasons, and I'd like to keep my dress as clean as possible.

Does anyone know how far in advance to mow a lawn so that it is less likely to stain a dress?

Also if you need to mulch the clippings into the lawn is there a timeframe where they'd be less likely to stick to the dress?

Any other general tips for keeping my dress clean? It's lace and has a long train. I already know to try not to walk with the train dragging (but pick it up instead). Any other advice?

Is finding a more casual dress from Lulus or somewhere an option for your 1st dress? I'm not sure there is any way to cut grass so that it doesn't stain clothing.

No, I am definitely wearing my dress. My FH and had been going back and forth about doing something small on our original date or just pushing everything back a full year, and he said he wanted me to wear my wedding dress on our day, whenever it was. My mom was diagnosed with cancer yesterday so that cemented us doing something now. We make sure my mom gets to see us married and see my dress (she hasn't seen it yet) and that I get to have her there on my wedding day since we don't know what the next year will bring. My dad passed away when I was in college and I still struggle with all of the father-daughter dances at weddings more than a decade later. I think I would be broken if I didn't have my mom there either, so we are doing the thing and going to make it as real and grand as we can given the circumstances.

Fortunately my dress is pre-owned so it's not 100% pristine anyway, but currently devoid of big green stains and I'm hoping to keep it that way. I know grass "bleeds" more when it is fresh cut I just don't know how long it takes for the blade to seal up after being cut. I know there is some risk either way, but if we can minimize whatever damage I do to my dress that would be great!

Sorry to hear about your mom’s diagnosis. If possible, have your train bustled for the outdoor ceremony. That way you won’t need to hold it the entire time. Could a seamstress possibly put in a temporary, lightly tacked hem at the bottom of the dress to shorten it enough so it won’t drag? Then you could undo it for your second wedding.

Because our ceremony is going to be just a handful of people I'm not envisioning a procession or anything so I think I can walk with the train in hand and just splay it out and pose it for photos. I think that would be easier than bustling and unbustling it and would save me from dragging it over grass. I don't know of any seamstress that is working right now and would do such quick alterations - we've only got 9 days.

Tip #1: Shout brand cleaner will get grass stains out of a wedding dress. My alterations woman recommended that

Tip #2: Cut the grass two days ahead of time and get someone who has a leaf blower to blow all the clippings out of the yard so you’re not getting stray pieces stuck to your shoes or dress

    Thank you so much!

Our venue is being amazing and letting us use the ceremony site for a small ceremony and said they will take care of the grass and everything for us - I'm thinking they're really experienced so will probably get the timing just fine for mowing and clean up. I definitely feel better having a stain backup plan though so will keep Shout on the list, just in case!

Have a landscape company cut it. Mine gets cut once a week and they pick up all the clippings. It would be fine the next day. If doing it yourself, blow clippings.
