Advice? Back Fat? Want to buy new dress.

RhnCasi419, on April 24, 2015 at 10:31 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 38

Ok, so I can't believe I'm posting a pic of me in my dress. I'm hating my dress choice but I am stuck with it, so I am thinking of getting off the shoulder sleeves. I have back fat. Freaking out. Any advice. I don't feel acceptable in this dress if the wedding was today. First fitting in July. Wedding in October. It zips, but it is snug up in the upper back. I am dieting and exercising like crazy.

The row machine at the gym does wonders for the back fat. I don't really think it is worth freaking out over, especially since you still have 6 months to go. Deep breath and you will look just fine!

Is the back a zipper or a tie back? I can't tell....mine gave me some back fat when I was tied too tight into...is there a way to let it out a bit?

I'm hearing a lot about those rowing machines. I am concerned about the fat on the sides of the dress how it is not a good fit. At this time, I feel the dress would have to come out slightly there, then would compromise the front which fits perfectly right now. I have a home gym, gym quality elliptical, hand weights, all kinds of other equipment, and of course any video I want from Roku (tv), but no rower! Deep breaths. Thank you.

Its a back zipper with crystal buttons going all the way down to the train which the buttons aren't showing up in the pic but it is a zipper.

That isn't fat. That is skin.

Not everything on a human that has a little bit of give when you press on it is fat.

I think you're dress is beautiful. And I'm sure it's glaring to you but it's not noticeable to me.

There's really no way to spot reduce (sorry), but strength training and some cardio has done wonders for me!

I highly recommend a personal trainer and making working out a habit that you just do.

Puplekitten I wish I felt the same way. Funny thing, the alterations woman and bridal consultant were telling me some stories of some of their brides who when the 1st came in were fine, then they came back months later for their fittings and their whole body was restructured. The alterations woman said one bride had a nice ass (cute coming from an older Italian seamstress dressmaker) and when she came back for final fittings her ass had widened SO MUCH from the types of exercises she was doing. The bridal shop said I could stand to lose about 5 lbs. But I need to target those pounds in that spot and wondering what exercises to do for that specific spot where the "skin" overhangs ... not to be gross but I'm not having any luck on youtube. I can't afford a trainer right now. Wondering what exercises target that area? And Yes diet is important.

It looks fine! Here is my back fat - to make you feel better. I love my dress, so I'm not freaking out about it. I was going to wear my hair up, but I decided I will wear it half up half down in curls, which will cover my back and then I won't have to worry about how it looks all night.

Your dress is so pretty - don't stress!!!

When I was concerned about this, I was told by the seamstress that strapless dresses have to be tight and it causes this on pretty much everyone.

If it bothers you, I would suggest adding straps so that it doesn't have to be as tight. That's what I did.

    Also re: rowing machine

You're right. You actually can get bigger if you're working out but not watching what you eat. The only way to lose fat is to eat at a deficit (ie cut calories). You can actually build up muscle UNDER fat and then end up even bigger. I always recommend working out AND dieting because diet will make you lose weight, but working out will make you look better as you lose it.

What type of home gym do you have? I've got a bowflex and there are tons of back exercises I can do with it. Check out Pinterest! There are lots of exercises pinned that don't require weight machines. Here is one I pulled http://www.skinnymom.com/13-moves-to-banish-bra-bulge/ but there are lots more! You still have plenty of time to tone your back! Just be diligent and you'll see results!

.............that awkward feeling when you've been exited for a couple days because you've almost got your waist down to 40" and then someone is complaining that their skin could be construed as fat........

You look really beautiful in the dress! I totally understand being uncomfortable about something even if others don't really notice it - for me it's my stomach in my dress.

If you start eating better and work out, you aren't going to get bigger - however if you use working out as an excuse to eat everything in sight you will (which could have been what happened to the bride you described). I strength train with 15-20lb weights pretty regularly, and have been getting smaller and more toned, not bigger.

As others have mentioned, there is no way to target fat loss, however if you would like to get toned in that area, I would work on pushups, pullups, any type of rows, and planks. For the rows, use heavy weights and challenge yourself.

Check out the book HIIT IT by The Fitnessista - she has really great food and exercise tips for a whole lifestyle change. I don't have a personal trainer but use her book and some of the workouts on her blog or other similiar blogs. Also - I've found that a fitbit really motivates me to move enough and get enough steps every day.

Good luck, and seriously you look great in the dress right now - anything else will just be a bonus!

    HAHA! that's great PK.

For specific workouts for that area of your back look up Bent row with dumbbells or lat pull downs.

But it does also have to do with diet which i am learning, i can rip weights but my body fat % is still high.

You won't get bulky doing strength training. I've leaned out, lost 12lbs, 7% body fat, gone from 32" waist to a 28" waist, and am down two sizes (8/10 to a 4/6) doing primarily strength training with little to no cardio. I also have broad shoulders and today am wearing a shirt very comfortably that I couldn't lift my hands above my head three months ago so my shoulders haven't bulked from strength training. And honestly, unless you're on testosterone, it's next to impossible for a woman to bulk... I lift heavy a couple days a week.

If you have a gym, I can post my workouts from my PT. I also have a couple that require very little equipment.

I'd highly recommend the book "The New Rules of Lifting for Women". Bodybuilding.com has some amazing at home circuit training exercises.

Also, huge fan of nerd fitness and this article:

ETA: I also second the fitbit type fitness tracker! I use a Polar M400 and love it! I can track my heartrate using the HR monitor strap. It also does GPS and can track my different workouts as well as step counting and sleeping.

Emaebe- thats not true for everyone, it has to do with body types and genetics, also with the way that you are doing your strength training.

Lower weights and more reps to challenge your self tend to result in a leaner look. Heavy weights and less reps can lead to bulking up.

    Wheres Val? she would know

ETA: i bulk up pretty easily and i don't take testosterone
