Addressing Stds/invites to Washington, Dc?

FutureMrsBoo, on February 4, 2018 at 11:41 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

I'm pulling my hair out with address etiquette! I live in DC, as do a lot of our guests. I know that it's the only exception to needing to spell out states, but I still plan to address to "Washington, District of Columbia" because I like the way it looks. But does anyone know what to do about the quadrants? I know that the standard rule is to spell out street directions, but I have never, ever seen a DC quadrant spelled out before. Here's what my instinct says:

Ms. Jane Doe

123 H Street, NW

Washington, District of Columbia

I moved out of DC last year after 11 years as a District resident. (Thanks, fiancé! Eye roll!) I don’t know about etiquette, but I’d personally just leave the quadrants as NE, NW etc. speaking from experience, I had a hard enough time just getting my mail at all in DC sometimes!

I wrote Connecticut Street NW. I was worried it wouldn’t get there if I got fancy with the quadrant. Plus that’s how it’s always written

I live in dc too and just put NW. Our invitations are being done by a calligrapher for our black tie wedding, and I didn't want any opportunity for the invites not to reach our guests.

I lived in DC and most of my family lives there. Im in maryland now but just put NW, NE, SE or SW they’re never really spelled out and neither is D.C. but if you want to spell that out it’s your prerogative. But really no one ever does.

Thanks everyone, glad there seems to be a consensus on quadrant!

I don't have advice about DC, but the post office here in PA told me to make sure the zip code is on the same line as city and state, not it's own separate line. Something about the way the machine scans the address.

DC is considered a state so you can abbreviate it.

My zip codes were on their own line and all my invites got to the correct addresses.
