Addressing invites: both husband and wife are lieutenants

Sara, on August 22, 2016 at 5:49 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4

I've been Googling and not finding exactly what I'm looking for. How do I address an invitation where both husband and wife are Naval officers - both with the rank of Lieutenant. Is it Lieutenants John and Jane or Lieutenant John and Lieutenant Jane or none of the above?

I think it's Lieutenants Mr and Mrs? My parents are both pastors and they said writing "The Reverends Dr. and Mrs." was the correct way! Hopefully someone else can weigh in here as well Smiley smile

I had the same question come up when addressing and had a hard time finding a specific example online. My husband is an Air Force officer and said to use Lieutenants John and Jane - hopefully he was correct because that's how I did it with two Majors.

Both wear the rank so needs to be listed as such. Highest ranking first, even if only by a few months. Military rank also supersedes any other title; for example address someone with their military rank vs. Dr. If they also have a PhD. This one is tricky for people and see this issue at work all the time.
