Addressing invite to a couple where the woman's name is hyphenated.

Aidan (Mrs. Cowgell!), on June 24, 2012 at 12:19 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4

So, we're sending out a few last B-list invites (god, I hate how bad that sounds) and ran in to this. We have friends of ours from faire that are married, but her last name is hyphenated. How would we address this? Is she a Ms. or a Mrs? Would their names be on different lines?

I was always taught that "Mrs." should only preface a woman's name when you're addressing her by her husband's name. aka "Mrs. Smith" or "Mrs. Bob Smith" or "Mr. and Mrs. Bob Smith"

I wouldn't use any title at all, just use their names and put the woman first connected with an "and" or "ampersand" to indicate the marriage. If it doesn't fit on one line that's okay, just make sure you use that connector.

    Susie Adams-Smith and

    John Smith

ETA - I think that applies anytime a married couple has different last names.

    IIRC it should be

Ms. Jane Smith-Doe and Mr. John Doe

    Oh yes, and Angelina's right.

I've always felt uncomfortable addressing a married woman as "Ms." but only b/c my mom hated it. Smiley smile So I revert to informal address in that situation. But if you want to address formally then do what Angelina said, it's correct! Smiley smile

This is a very helpful post because I have family members with hyphenated names and was not sure how to address something to them either.
