Addressing Guests in Med School

Emily, on May 11, 2022 at 7:45 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

We have a few guests in our guest list who are in medical school. Does anyone know when you can start to addressing them as doctors? Is it when they are in residency, or is it after their residency is completed?

Thanks!

After they graduate from M3 (summer before they start residency).

Since that's when they officially receive their M.D. diploma.

Once they graduate and get the fancy piece of paper they get the new title.

Even after they receive the title, it is reserved for business events, not social events like a wedding.

My personal experience and quick cursory research on US etiquette differs. In my experience, those who have earned their PhD (or equivalent doctoral degree, such as EdD) have the choice to use Dr. both socially as well as professionally, whereas it is the standard to use it in both social and professional situations for those with their MD. In this case, if they have already earned their MD then I would address them as Dr.

It used to be that only medical doctors were referred to as Dr. socially. For non-MD doctors, it is now accepted that it is more polite for you to address someone by their chosen title rather than unilaterally following a strictly prescribed rule of etiquette.

I am a doctor. The title Dr. comes after medical school graduation and before residency. Once you receive your degree of doctor of medicine, you're a Dr.
