Addressing envelope for deacon?

SarahStillwell, on July 9, 2016 at 8:40 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

I need to send the invite to our deacon, who is married. I assume it is addressed as Deacon and Mrs. Blank Blank but just make sure before it goes in the mail.

ETA: words

He is a permanent deacon (obviously since he's married). I'm finding mixed answers on this. Some are saying Mr. and Mrs.

My FFIL is a Deacon. Everything is being addressed as Mr. & Mrs. Lastname per what they told us. He is invited to many events, and performs many services (he will be doing our wedding) and neither FH or I have seen mail addressed to 'Deacon and Mrs.' That's just the information I have, hope it helps! Thank you LeAnne. That does help. Especially since you got your information directly from a deacon. Smiley smile

Deacons are "Reverend Mr." for formal invitations, priests are "Reverend Fr." So for a deacon and his wife, "Reverend Mr. and Mrs. Blank blank".

I've read that reverend applies only to transitional deacons, not permanent. But I could be off base since I am not catholic and I'm getting this info off the internet.

Not all deacons are reverends. I'd go with Mr. and Mrs.

Celia, any deacon in the Catholic Church is ordained clergy. If you want to be safe, Sarah, I'd put Deacon and Mrs. I would find it strange to address an ordained person like a layperson.

ETA: this link has some good Q&A. http://www.formsofaddress.info/CLE.html

No, definitely not Reverend in the Catholic Church. If you are a Catholic it is 'Deacon.' I think it will just come down to whichever you prefer, in this day in age I find there tends to be no 'right' or 'wrong' answer.
