Address Etiquette

Arlene, on August 6, 2021 at 9:03 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17
Hi all!!

Happy wedding planning!
I have a question about address etiquette.A lot of the people I am inviting to our wedding are extended family that although I haven't spoken to them in a while, they're still family so they'll definitely be invited. My question is how do I ask them via text or email for their addresses so I can send them save the dates and then invitations?I feel like it may come out clunky or weird just texting them out of the blue and going straight to the address for save the date buisness lol.
Thanks all!!!

Are you having a wedding website? If so, many of them have links that you can automatically send as text/emails asking your guestlist for their information. That's what my husband and I did, it was the easiest way for us because we didn't have to input or write down everyone's info. Once they clicked the link they were able to fill out everything and obviously it stated that it was for the wedding.

We actually asked our parents to contact the family members we're not as close to. They bragged a little about us getting finally married, used the chance to catch up with family and asked for the addresses. Our parents loved it.

We got a lot of addresses from the parents. Also, there were a few relatives who I know hadn't moved in years and owned their own home. I knew the town, but not exact mailing address, so I would Google their name + whitepages to get their address. For the remaining people, I just texted them and said something along the lines of, "hey, I hope you're doing well! I was hoping to get your address." No one really questioned it, but if they did I followed up with it being for the wedding. People don't really think about it as hard as brides do lol.

Like others have mentioned, do your parents have your extended family's addresses. Between my mom, grandmother and mother-in-law I was able to get all of the addresses for extended family.

My dad threw me into a group chat with all of his brothers, where I asked them to send me their and their children's (my cousins) addresses. My mom keeps an address book with many of her side's addresses. Addresses for more distant relatives (like my mom's cousins) or family friends was up to my parents to find.

I actually sent out Christmas cards last year which gave me a reason more than just "Hey, I want to send you wedding stuff" to ask for everyone's addresses. For others I've asked my mom or his mom for them or had them reach out to older family friends. I'll probably also do Christmas cards this year so I can update my list if anyone has moved before I send out Save the Dates in January of February.

Last Christmas I reached out to them and asked for address for Christmas cards, I’m sneaky like that.

Just be straightforward with them. “Hey, I’m getting married in (month) and need to get your address for save the date and invitation “. It shouldn’t be awkward to ask if you feel they should be invited.

As others have mentioned above, I would see if your wedding website has an email/link to collect that information (if you are doing a website) and/or ask your parents if they have it or can reach out to get it.

This is what we did for quite a few people. Started with my parents for my side but there were quite a few addresses they didn’t have. And FH didn’t have any of his friends’ addresses, so he had to do a lot of it via text. It wasn’t awkward (I don’t think) - one seemed to mind.
