Adding to a Dress?

Tori, on December 5, 2019 at 12:29 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 4

Hey all!

First post here. Woo woo! So I recently went to a bridal shop open house and won a free dress. It's a sample dress off the rack, so of course I'm going to have to get it altered to fit. But I wanted to reach out to any of you who has added to a dress? Right now the dress has cap sleeves but I want long sleeves and then possibly having a zipper back instead of buttons. Has anyone done this before? Is it possible?

Thanks!

I think it depends on a lot of factors but I’ve seen girls on here who have added long sleeves and the zipper seems to me like an easy fix but I’m not a seamstress. Ultimately I think you’d have to consult a seamstress but short answer, it’s possible! Smiley smile congrats on the win!

Alterations can be pricey and it adds up quickly. With all those changes I would've just purchased a dress that already has sleeves than to add them to the dress you have because the costs of that could be expensive. Have you tried on a gown that has sleeves?

So lucky! Shop around for reasonable seamstress. Anything is possible. Good luck!

I didn’t add sleeves but I almost did! The reason I didn’t was because it was soooo expensive. I added a small bow to the front of my dress (less than $5 worth of ribbon) and it was $90 to add it. However, if I had a free dress I probably would’ve gone ahead and added the sleeves. I would also be careful about who is adding sleeves because you don’t want lace or fabric to clash. The designer of my dress would’ve been adding lace sleeves the same as my dress, but a seamstress probably wouldn’t have been able to use the same fabric.
