Adding Some Sparkle?

Currie, on October 1, 2020 at 11:41 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15
Hello all!
I have a question of opinion on if a veil with a lot of sparkle is tacky? I am the definition of girly girl and glitter is my favorite color. My dress is a beautiful pink with white lace and while I adore the dress it is very simple with no glitter or “wow” piece. I was wanting to add a shimmery veil (all over shimmer or maybe a scattering of rhinestones which is something I’ve seen more often however I’m not a fan of the polka dot look it gives, I was hoping for a glitter veil that doesn’t look like a third grader spilled craft glitter) to add some much wanted sparkle. I’m not wearing any jewelry so the veil would be the only statement part. Would this be tacky? I’m able to find tons of pictures of shimmery veils online however none of them are on actual brides so I can’t see if other people have actually gotten them and how they turned out. I just don’t want to look like a craft project but I can’t imagine not sparkling on my wedding day in some way so any ideas are appreciated!!

I honestly had thought about it, but the veil gets harder, and heavier. This will make the veil not as smooth and romantic as I want it to be, so I decided against it. I will be wearing a tiara though. That’s also something. I plan to have glitters on my nails when that day comes 😊

I don't think that a glittery veil is tacky.

I agree with Belle, all the veils I have seen with glitter tend to be very stiff. They seem to have a starched feel to them, and do not move in a free-flowing fashion that most brides would like their veils to move in. If you don’t mind that, then I say go for it! If not though, I would suggest a veil with scattered crystals. You could add more sparkle with a belt (depending on your dress), super sparkly shoes, a sparkly tiara or hair piece, sparkly nails, make up with sparkle or shine, or add some sparkly accessories.

Ummmm it depends on your style. I have seen some what to me are tacky wedding dresses but to the bride they are not. I think if you want glitter I would look at some but I think most important veils should match the dress.

I love glitter. I had a layer of glitter added under the first layer of my dress so every move I made I sparkled. I had a very plain veil since my dress was so sparkly. Since your dress is rather plain, I think a sparkly veil would be perfect Smiley smile

Most glitter tulle is stiffer than regular tulle because of the adhesive needed to get the glitter to stick. I think a glittery veil would look beautiful, but as previous posters have mentioned it would most likely be a bit heavier and less flowy. If possible, could you get a sample of the fabric before buying the veil to make sure it's exactly what you're looking for?

They either look terribly tacky or great. Some veils are made of synthetics that melt and burn at low temps. People think they can save time hot gluing on each bead or crystal or faceted rhinestone. But even if great care is taken not to use too much hot glue, the fabric itself melts to a little plastic bead of saran wrap like plastic, attached to the bead of glue, holding the bead.
So yeah, big cheap tacky blobs. If you must use glue, use a veil of nylon tulle or mesh, which melts at a higher temp, lit match heat, not small glue bead. Practice, you can do a respectable job. . The nicest of all, the sparkly yet still elegant bead and sparkle designers use, is best done by using a needle and thread. And mixing little pearl beads with a soft sheen, and small and medium size pieces of glass crystal. Swarovsky is the big name, and if you have a gown $3K or more, you likely can afford it. But in fact any reasonable drilled glass crystal bead sparkle. Czech crystal, or fire polished with a rainbow shimmer, all are nice. Use rhinestones, too, but not cheap quality, or they look dull and grey. The price of little bags of crystal will kill you at craft stores. I have used fire mountain gems.

Bicone beads are the faceted all around beads. There are also half bicones, flat with facets on the outer side, and a flat back.
Buy monofilament thread, Nylon that is strong and as thin as a hairs. Buy needle threaders, so you can thread 5-6 needles at a time without going nuts. They are cheap foil and wire. Swaravski is on sale and first link I found, but look for other cheaper brands. There are inspiration sections on the site. You can download, free, how to on sewing and making jewelry with beads. If you want a squeeze clip to attach a veil, or to make jar jewelry, they have 40-50 hair jewelry findings ( pieces to work on) so you can do things to match your sparklies. I love the look, but less is more. Don't do like one every two inches. More like 2-3 on a piece of paper if scattered, plus some designs. Look for rolls of pearl beads or Crystal if you want to sew lines and curlicues, or put a 1 bead thick line of beads on all or just the lower half of your veil. This gives a little weight, so it takes a strong breeze to lift it over your head. https://www.firemountaingems.com/itemdetails/h20a7535cy try for 720 beads per bag or 144 in different size beads. This can save 50% or more on hobby stores selling only a small number. Per container. You likely will use hundreds.

Added...a complete beginner can do this kind of sew on crustal embellishment. Each of my kids could by 7 or 8 years old. It just takes patience to do the same thing over and over and not get sloppy.

You could purchase some lace alencon or appliques that has beads/sequins/sparkle to line your veil with! I used this one to line mine and it adds just a touch of shine, but there is a range of glam out there. It was easy to DIY.

I think a sparkly veil could be stunning if you get the right one. Are you thinking all over sparkle are just around the edges? As pps mentioned, if your dress allows it, you could also add sparkle with a belt and definitely a little sparkle with your nails.
