Adding sleeves

Cathy, on August 30, 2017 at 8:47 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

So I went to a bridal show last weekend and won the grand prize, a free wedding dress. The dress is beautiful, but it is strapless. I have a small midsection, but larger boobs so I struggle with strapless dresses. For those who may have added sleeves to your dress, how did you decide on a sleeve and could you tell the dress was altered??

I am having cap sleeves added to my strapless dress. I just went for alterations yesterday and was so happy in how the cap sleeves looked with my dress! I feel like it really made a difference in a good way. If you're considering adding to your dress, the best thing to do is consult with someone who does alterations. They can pin it on for you to picture it.

Did actually win a particular dress, or can you opt for a credit towards the dress of your choice?

congrats!! Depending on the dress, you may want to consider straps instead of sleeves. I didn't convert a strapless, but have tulle straps with applique on mine. It could be a nice way to compliment the dress while providing support. I also have a large top, and I feel quite secure with the setup.

Like Chris said, straps may be easier to do on some dresses for the support. But you can always buy a sleeved topper if you really want the look of sleeves.

My dress is pretty much a strapless with some lacey bit added, that's how mine came though.

Depends on the material of the dress though, what would look good with it.

Ask someone who has alterations experience. I added off the shoulder sleeves for looks and had to buy the lace separately and pay to have it hand sew on.

You'll need to purchase the matching lace. Mine was $150/yard alone, plus the alterations cost. It was expensive! Shop around for someone who has done a lot of sleeves.

I don't think you could tell on mine. Here's a crappy before and after from the back.

I went with a bolero over my sleeveless dress because I also wanted to cover up the open back.

I went to get my first fitting and they had sort of cap sleeves that went perfectly that they already had at the store. They were $180, and included adding them on.

I am a 38DD, and when I went back for my next fitting, I could tell I am going to be so much more comfy with them on. Sorry I do not have a pic of them finished yet. Last pic is stock of the dress as a strapless.
