Adding more structure to a sheath gown?

Maria, on February 23, 2021 at 10:49 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 4

Hi there,

I bought this dress below because I loved the simplicity of it and how short the train was. I tried on another dress in that store (second photo with illusion racerback). I loved the way the second dress looked from the back (but did not like the front). I am wondering, what can I do to give more structure to the first dress to make it fit more like the second? Can alterations add more structure to the area around the zipper and my bottom or is this more of a shapewear issue?

I would definitely talk to a seamstress about that because it looks like it shouldn't be a problem to be changed!

It looks like it would be fairly easy to do but show the pictures to your alterations person and I’m sure they can give you some advice.

Thanks! I bought the dress off the rack and will be getting it in two weeks so I will talk to a seamstress then.

Since the first dress is a sheath and the second is a fit and flare, would I need to make the sheath dress more of a fit and flare shape to get to what I am trying to achieve? Or should I start with adding some type of lining to the sheath dress to make it more smooth?

The main difference I believe you are seeing is due to the difference in the shape of the skirt. The sheath can definitely be made into a fit and flare, but just be prepared that the alterations cost might be higher than you are expecting.

In addition, it looks like the fit and flare skirt has either darting or seaming around the waist that really pulls in the whole area and makes it very structured. Again, a competent seamstress should be able to make it look how you would like.
