Adding illusion neckline

Kimberly, on March 15, 2016 at 12:57 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 13

I fell in love with my wedding dress the second I tried it on! The only problem is that it's strapless and I'd really like to add an illusion neckline for more coverage and support (my future mother-in-law is very conservative and I don't want anything falling out when I play with my little cousins). My dress is all lace and I'm not sure how easy it will be to add an illusion neckline or how it will look. Has anyone had an illusion neckline added to their dress after purchasing it or suggestion? Thanks!

Can you post a photo of the dress?

I have the same issue with my dress. I'm having lace cap sleeves added to mine.

My dress had an illusion neckline with a lace bodice. I didn't add the illusion so no advice there, but looks-wise it can be a very nice combo.

You could always add a lace bolero - I tried on a couple over strapless dresses when on the dress hunt (I didn't want strapless), and it was pretty nice.

    Something like this:

ETA - I found it was best to do bolero (fitted to under the bust) to give a more unified look versus just adding lace straps, as that usually looked like the straps were just added on afterward.

Absolutely consider a bolero--- look for inspiration here:

Note: that's a random shop, I have no experience with them, it just shows a ton of gorgeous options.

BHLDN has some really beautiful lace toppers on sale right now. I just drooled over them.

Beautiful dress. I agree with the bolero idea.

@Kimberly S I would go with a lace bolero or detachable lace cap sleeves. Many designers make accessories like this that will match your dress. I was considering having sleeves made for my dress by the seamstress and the lace bolero jacket was much cheaper and gave me the coverage I wanted for the ceremony.

While I didn't add to mine, maybe consider matching lace and using lace to make the illusion neckline.

@Kimberly S I am bored at work so I checked out the accessories Mori Lee has on their website. There are a few bolero jacket and detachable cap sleeve options. I would check them out and see if there are any you like. If your bridal shop doesn't have any in stock, ask if they would be willing to order something in for you to try on. That's what my bridal shop did.

@Kimberly, that is a gorgeous dress!!! I'd ask your bridal shop if they have an in-house seamstress and request to meet with the seamstress before purchasing the dress. The seamstress should be able to tell you whether adding an illusion neckline would be doable and how expensive it would be, as well as make other recommendations. You could consult outside seamstresses, too, but the advantage to using the one who works with your salon would be that she could see you in the sample dress in person before you purchase anything. An outside seamstresses would only be able to see pictures and not see the dress fabric and structure.

Hello! I am actually wanted to do the same. I purchased my strapless wedding dress and I would really love to have an illusion neckline added. Were you able to have this done?
