Adding Buttons to Back of Dress

SarahL2T, on August 30, 2016 at 5:30 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 5

Did anyone add buttons to the back of their dress, when it wasn't originally made with them? How much did it cost? At David's Bridal they said it's $2 per button but I wasn't planning on getting it altered there. Were there any issues with it?

What kind of buttons? Instead of a zip? Decorative? A photo of what you mean would help!

Yeah, I have a zipper on the back of my dress, and I want to add decorative buttons to it to cover the zipper up. Attached is a pic of the back of my dress and then a pic of how I would like it to be.

Wish we could tag people (hint hint mods), but @Lorith works at DB and though you said you're not getting your alterations there, perhaps she'll be able to advise.

$2 per button is a good price. I used to work at DB. If you go to an independent seamstress you may find cheaper, maybe $1 button or somewhere in between. You shouldn't have any issues- depending on the material of the dress. I can't really tell from your picture if it's satin or charmeuse - but make sure your seamstress has buttons that will match the fabric. It may look odd if they aren't the same. I would also make sure that you get to see them pinned on in some way before you commit to make sure you love it!

Also, do you just want them to be decorative or do you actually want them to button? Most of the time the buttons are only decorative, so they may not fully cover the zipper as you are imagining but will only sit partially over it.

Thanks @FutureMrs.G! It's a satin dress, and I'm totally fine with decorative (as they are in the 2nd picture, you can see the zipper a bit). Plus FH will probably throw a fit if he has to undo a billion buttons at the end of the night lol! I'll definitely ask to see them pinned before they sew them on, thanks for the advice!
