Adding a Slit to a Mermaid dress?

Iliana, on July 29, 2022 at 8:37 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7
I was wondering if a seamstress would be willing to add a slit to the dress? Or if it’s even feasible to add a slit to this dress? It has lace floral and like a glitter tulle, several layers.Adding a Slit to a Mermaid dress? 1

Hmm.. from my more limited fabric expertise, I might recommend against a slit on that dress. From what I can tell, the bottom layer could probably hold the slit well. Tulle is a very difficult fabric to work with and depending on how it’s cut, the skirt can look uneven or accidental afterwards especially with the way this one is gathered at the bottom. You should also consider that it might mess up the heading/lace appliqués that are on the skirt. My guess is possible, but I would highly recommend reaching out to a seamstress to see if they can.

When I was looking at dresses of this style, I asked the designer if a slit can be added. The answer is yes, BUT it will alter the overall shape of the dress. You will lose some of the fitted silhouette since you are opening it up at the bottom. With that being said, I don’t think it would look bad, it’s just more about what shape you want.

To me, this dress would be ruined by adding a slit. The shape and the way the skirt drapes would be dramatically different. It might technically be possible to do but I don't think it is advisable.

I’ve seen a couple mermaid styles that had a slit in the lower part of the skirt but it was part of the original design. Looking at your dress, I don’t think a slit is the best idea. You have to decide if you want a slit or a mermaid style because they are not interchangeable.

I personally would advise against it. The style of that dress doesn’t seem very well suited for a slit in my opinion.

I ended up getting that exact same dress as it was the only one I liked in stock. Last one they had in general. They advised me against a leg slit and even said they couldn't add off the shoulder straps either. I was told due to the designer not making that dress anymore changes were limited snd they could only bring it out an inch in the hips.

It would seem that the dress would have needed to be designed originally for a leg slit. Otherwise the balance of the dress could be lost when adding a slit.
