Adding a corset and a layer of tulle?

Maeghan, on January 27, 2021 at 2:01 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

I have NO idea what alterations cost, and we're on a really strict budget. I have the dress I want picked out and since I can't find my dream dress, I found one that I can make minor alterations to so that it will be perfect.

Does anyone have any idea what it would cost to add a corset back (actual corset, not just the look), and a layer of sparkly fabric to the second layer of the skirt?

I think it depends on a lot like location and the dress. I’m trying to add a layer of lace and shiny tulle when my dress comes in. Have you taken the dress to a seamstress and asked? I’m going to get several quotes and see which seamstress I like best.

To be honest we don't have a TON of options where I am, I think maybe 3 locally that I could find info on. I guess I'm just worried they'll tell me it's not possible, or it's going to cost a ton of money to do it.

Go on yelp and call whoever you find for info. Price depends on your location and the services you're getting.

I worked in bridal for three years, and I would highly recommend looking into ordering a corset kit! It's very time consuming for a seamstress to make the loops of a corset, and the kits are usually pretty affordable (at our store they were fifty dollars, but I'm sure you can find them for cheaper online). I hope that's helpful, let me know if you have any other questions!

I just had my dress converted from a zipper back to a corset back and it cost $150. However, prices are going to vary widely by region and experience level, so best to check with local seamstresses in your area.

Does it have the same effect as building a corset into the dress? I want it to cinch in my waist and upper half

Yes, it's exactly the same. When adding a corset to a dress, the loops for the lacing to go through can be made by hand by a seamstress (time consuming and therefore expensive) or the pre-sewn manufacturered kit with loops can be used. Here's an example from Amazon that shows what the kit looks like (https://www.amazon.com/YCShun-Wedding-Replacement-Adjustable-Chamapgne/dp/B07RGR9QZ7/ref=asc_df_B07RGR9QZ7/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=367933954720&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17044928060076651576&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9060229&hvtargid=pla-793185428332&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=77518764638&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=367933954720&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=17044928060076651576&hvqmt=&hvdev=m&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9060229&hvtargid=pla-793185428332). Again, exact same result, just less work for the seamstress.

I should clarify- the effectiveness of a corset will depending on the pre-existing structure of the dress before the corset is added. How the corset is added won't make much of a difference, but if the dress isn't very structured, the corset won't be very effective at cinching things in either way. Do you have a picture of your dress?

Adding onto this the biggest this for cinching the waist is going to be the strength of the fabric and boning. There are some fabrics that are too fragile to add a corset, but if you just want a cinching effect without the corset back you can always wear a corset under the dress itself.
