Add off shoulder straps or not?

Deborah, on April 2, 2021 at 3:07 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 29

Hi everyone! I’m getting into the home stretch here, my wedding is on July 11! I’d like to get your opinions on my dress. It came as a spaghetti strap and because it’s a heavy ballgown (and since I didn’t like the thin straps anyways), I got it altered to be thicker, I believe it’s ½ inch now. And I absolutely LOVE IT!!!!! (see pics below!!) But I also want to feel more princess-y, and I really like the idea of off-shoulder tulle to help with that look. I brought that up at my last fitting and my mom shot that idea down, saying that I shouldn’t have gotten the straps if I wanted that because “it’s either shoulder straps or off shoulder straps not both.” But I’ve been looking online and I think it would be super cute with both, I’m just not sure about it with how wide my straps are and I don’t want to go back to thin straps, and know I definitely do not want strapless with off-shoulder. I’m having another fitting in May with my sister (MOH) and another bridesmaid and will ask them what they think but I also value other brides’ opinions! I’m wondering if you lovely ladies think it would look good with the thick straps and off shoulder! So the pics below are my dress how it is, and a few pics of off shoulder styles (with and without straps) that I like. Please let me know what you think and if it would be a good addition or not because I can’t decide!

My dress (sorry for bad pics and my nasty hair lol)

First of all, the dress is gorgeous and you look beautiful in it! I don't think your straps are too wide to look good with the off the shoulder look and think it will look really pretty with them. The dress is beautiful without them but in my opinion, it won't look bad if you add the off the shoulder. No matter what you decide you're going to look like a princess!

The straps and off the shoulder would look really nice on that dress and it’s an amazing looking dress! My dress is just off the shoulder but I’m making those removable since I don’t trust myself not to rip them once the reception starts Smiley winking

I think your dress is beautiful as is. You can add the shoulder drapes but it doesn't need them

How pretty!! Your dress wouldn't look bad with them! You could always ask if the seamstress could make the off the shoulder straps removable?

    Dear Deborah,

I just wanted to add my two cents: I think that you should do one or the other, not both though. If the bodice is enough to support the dress and keep it from slipping this would work well with off-the-shoulder straps. If I had to keep the existing straps in order to add off-the-shoulder ones, I wouldn't try changing it.

Either way it's so beautiful and your silhouette looks amazing in it!

That dress is gorgeous on you! Great choice. I think it would look beautiful both ways. I get you with wanting the princess feeling. Maybe your seamstress can just hold up tulle to your arms while you're wearing the dress so you can see what it would look like. If you like it then they can officially add it.

I say go for it! 🥰🙌🏼 The dress will be gorgeous (& so will you! 😍) regardless. I just think in my opinion it adds an extra beautiful touch, that simultaneously shows some of your personality/creativity as well. Maybe make it to where you can easily add/remove them if you need to.

Yes to the shoulder straps! I think it will add a touch more of elegance and really bring out the elegance in the dress! You look amazing though! Good find!

You could also add a fluffed out cap sleeve or flutter sleeve that covers part of the straps. Pretty much that off the shoulder sleeve but sitting higher.

I was thinking something similar with removable just in case, I’ll just have to see what they look like cause I wouldn’t want to spend the money for something I don’t use:/

Hopefully I’ll find a veil I like at my next fitting, if I decide to have one! That’s really good advice that I didn’t think about thank you!

Yeah I’d be worried about them ripping too but I also don’t know if I’d want to take them off and lose the vibe...just don’t know!

I’m going to David’s Bridal so I’m hoping they’ll have short lengths of tulle we can use to see, if not my friend has a veil she decided she doesn’t want and said I can cut it to see! That will be the only way to see if it works and I’m hoping I can figure it out
