A part of my 18KT white gold engagement ring is turning yellow gold? HELP!!

Bergkirk, on June 13, 2010 at 8:12 AM Posted in Planning 0 15

HELP!! Is this normal? I got engaged in December 2009. On the bottom of my ring I have a small clean area (no etched details) put in should I need to stretch the ring I can without ruining the other part of the ring with etched details. The rest of the ring is detailed is fine and still white gold. The clean area the gold is starting to show through. Is this normal so soon? Or do I have a cheap ring?? lol

I have had mine for a year and on my 6 month check up they did the rhodium(sp) dip. It looked like new. Someone I believe posted about this a while ago and the consensus was that white gold occassionally needs to be re dipped and it costs around $30. However, it is included in most protection plans. I know it is covered on my plan with Kays.

Thanks...Was your ring white gold and then you had the rhodium dip? Or you have a different medal?

Thanks for posting this question. I haven't noticed this yet, but when it happens I'll know what to do.

    Advice from a jeweler :-)

All gold is alloyed unless it is 24k...18k gold is 75% gold and 25% alloys (ie other metals). All gold starts out yellow but in the alloying process for white gold they add white metals to make it more white. It still has a yellow tinge until it is Rhodium plated. Rhodium is a member of the platinum family and give it that bright shiney white look.

I've had my e-ring since Dec 2006. It's white gold, also from Kay Jewelers. It has started to yellow a little, though it's only noticeable if you look for it. I'm planning to get it dipped and cleaned just before the wedding. And it's covered in our insurance plan. Apparently this happens since all gold is naturally yellow.

Samatha Taylor - would it cost more to have it dipped in Rhodium? Is it normal just after 6 months! The jeweler I went to said they have to file it down a little so that the plating would stick..Is this correct?

Thanks everyone for input!! Smiley smile

I've had my e-ring for a little over a year and I haven't had this problem. I've had it cleaned about every 2 months or when it just starts to look kinda bad. My mom and I also have other white gold rings (in my opinion it looks better and I'm allergic to yellow gold) and none of our other rings have started to look yellow. It might have to do with the place you purchased your ring from.

From what I understand, it depends on the persons body how fast your ring needs dipped. Some people never need it dipped, and some people need it dipped often because the chemical make up of their body. What makes it turn gold is the chemical reaction with your body, some people have more of whatever chemical it is that makes it turn gold, some have less. I had a white gold class ring and never knew anything about dipping and it never needed it. I'm hoping my e ring won't need it but I do have the care plan incase it does! Check with your jeweler!

Like the jeweler above posted all white gold rings are coated in rhodium to make them white. Depending on where you live, the chemical make up of the water and air, and your natural skin chemical makeup the rhodium can wear faster. For example I used to live in a house with a water softener and seemed to have less wear and tear on my rings than I do now that I live in a house with a well and the water is hard. There really isn't a natural white gold, it's man made and sometimes needs help staying that way.

I didn't have a problem with my ring turning until I got married. I have been wearing my e-ring and my wedding band for a little over a month now and my ring started changing colors. I took it to the ring shop and told them about my problem. They said with two metals rubbing together it will take the "white" gold off. I got them saulded (sp) together and they said it should take care of the problem. I wore my e-ring for about 6 months with no problem. Just letting you know if you don't have issues now, you might have them with wearing both rings.
