a "no food" wedding? Catering too expensive!

Has anyone had a "no food" wedding? Lol. Our venue is $4K and we are slowly paying that down. The list of "approved caterers" that we are to use are off the charts with the prices ($100-120/guest). We cut our guest list down from 75, to 60, to 45, and are now at the point where key people would be getting cut. That's still over $4K additional for catering. Not to mention all the other expenses.

So my question is, is it unusual to... not feed people at your wedding? I have heard of "dessert only" weddings if you have one later at night. What about an appetizer(s)/small plates only wedding? Alcohol only wedding? Everybody grab a sandwich and lawn chair wedding, and have a seat ??? 😬😬
We are not receiving any financial help from either family. Which is fine of course, but I do not want to be obligated to pay for these people to eat a lavish meal and drink it up on my tab 🤷🏻‍♀️ So where can I cut out a major expense? If not the food, is it weird to have a wedding with no music/DJ? Anything else that can go? We are already DIYing and saving everywhere we can find, but still looking at a $**** wedding. Need this down to about $6-8K (do dreams really come true? Lol).
Other issue is vendors not responding on this app. It's like pulling teeth to get a response!

Change your venue. We are wanting to spend no more than $5k, we found one venue for free (friend's place- will need rentals tho) and one place for about $20/person (this includes camping sleepover though). Another diy venue that is more normal (ie, noooo camping; in the city) would be similar price. $4k for just the venue on that budget seems way off kilter. Curious what metro area. We are in Philly.

Look. Some of these comments are just down right mean. I get it. I my venue is 2900 but my caterer is charging 6000. It has left us in a bad place mentally because we love our venue. I was actually thinking about doing the same thing as you. Cake and champagne, maybe a charcuterie set up. Your guests are not paying for your wedding...you are. Your finances and your life matter! If the people you are inviting actually care about you, you dont need a show to impress them. They will be happy just seeing you married and celebrating you and your husband.

I totally feel you I can relate to this as I am looking to cut down to 40 and look where to save $ as well while still hosting a great wedding . Perhaps look into a a cocktail hour the whole night where guest will usually get full on a really nice hors d’oeuvre display .. have alcohol included but the sit down dinner will take up a lot of the budget if you’re thinking $100 per person . If you don’t want a dj still have music to set the vibe , a violinist or even guitarist even at least for an hour to play . You find what’s best for you

A cocktail reception is only cheaper than a full dinner if you buy everything at Costco from the frozen section and heat them in the oven. Catering companies charge more for appetizers in that setting due to the labor involved. 100+ mini pieces is more work preparing and serving than a medium steak and mashed potatoes per person.
