a little worried about our honeymoon in Mexico with the new travel advisory warnings

SettingTheBarr, on March 15, 2023 at 9:49 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 12

We've had our honeymoon booked at Beloved Playa Mujeres outside of Cancun for a long time now, with us flying out next month. With the new travel advisories and warnings about Mexico due to recent events and increased cartel activity, we're a little worried. We've already decided to not venture "out" of the resort into desolate areas for excursions.

Do you think it will be safe if we just stick to the resort and the beach for the resort? Quintana Roo (the state that holds Cancun) has a level 2 for exercise extreme caution due to crime and kidnappings, and I just want to know if anyone has some safety tips, or travel advice since we can't really cancel or change our honeymoon this late in the game.

With every country, certain areas are higher risk than others. I think cartels are more present in Tulum which is further away from Cancun. Tourism is Mexico's #1. Any resort will take advanced steps in security because they do not want money loss. Just use your best judgement, arrange transport from the airport, look for hotel staff on duty like lifeguards, security, police, and focus on each other rather than seeing everything in Cancun. And if you do venture, opt for a tour promoted by the resort. Best wishes!

My honeymoon is also in Cancun. I think you’ll be okay if you stick to the resort and use reputable airport transfers to and from the resort.

What does your gut tell you? I want to say you'll be fine if you stick to the resort, but I'm also a huge fan of following your gut. Whatever you decide, I hope you have a safe and happy honeymoon.

Mexico typically has that warning. Make sure you have pre-booked transportation (potentially through Beloved), and they are usually very good at providing instructions on where you will be able to find the transportation folks and what color uniform they are wearing. When you get off the plane and walk through the airport, people will try to grab your bags to carry them for you. Just firmly walk through the airport and don’t talk to anyone (ignore instincts to be polite) and go straight to where your pre-booked transportation is. The resorts typically are gated and have armed security on the outside to ensure visitor safety. If you go on excursions, make sure they are booked through reputable companies rather than wandering around on your own. I have been to Mexico on several occasions, and these are the strategies I’ve used. Its sad because Mexico has such a beautiful and rich culture which the cartel violence makes it hard to be able to fully appreciate and enjoy.

This was all very helpful, thank you so much for taking the time to write it out. That's mildly terrifying about people trying to grab your bags and carry them and VERY HELPFUL to prepare in advance for that because I'm always "shell-shocked pikachu face" about stuff when I'm not prepared for a situation like that.

They’re trying to get that tip and can be pretty forceful with their tactics because a lot of people who are thrown off guard will say yes and then you have to pay a hefty tip to get them back. The various taxis and transportation companies there are also trying to get you to go with them. It’s hard to tell who is legit, who is price gouging, and who is maybe a little less dishonest. That’s why it’s best to go through a company like Expedia or your resort before you get there. You may end up paying a bit more then what you may get on-site but there’s a risk to that.

I did book my airport transfer already through Beloved so I'm glad that's not something to worry about!

I have been there several times and it's beautiful. If you decide to wonder around try to stick with guided tours or excursions. Usually the hotels/resorts have that service. There's also parks that are beautiful and since you have to pay to enter you would be more safe. There's Xcaret and Xelha for example, and you could also get there through hotel transportation

I mean it's not a free for all at the airport, there's still security and everyone speaks English. Just get your bags and walk through. Someone might sell you a timeshare before you exit the building, just say no thanks and keep walking. If you feel anxious, just put on sunglasses and act like you know where you're going. When you exit, you'll see resort drivers with signs and other drivers. Since your car may not be directly through the resort, your car would be further back as noted by the airport signs. I see many solo lady travelers in flip flops and backpackers left alone. You will be fine.

I was in Mexico last month, right near your resort (at Atelier Playa Mujeres) and the area of the hotels was very, very secure. There was a gated entrance at the start of the resort drive where our driver had to scan his license and inform a guard where he was going. And then our resort itself had the same security. I was there and home before the recent stories broke but I felt safe the entire trip. It sounds like you've planned everything as well as you can, and like others have said, just be smart at the airport. Since you booked your transportation through the resort, follow the directions they provide and just ignore or firmly decline anyone offering to wheel your bags for you. Also watch out for taxi drivers that will try to convince you your pre-paid transportation has already departed. My friend and her husband got caught with that and paid for a taxi, even though their hotel shuttle was still at the airport.
