a bit frustrated.

Ceelie , on April 19, 2019 at 1:18 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 27

When I bought my dress, I was told I'd be able to replace the buttons on the back with a zipper. They're now telling me they can't do that because the dress is already fitted to my figure and she needs two inches to put in a zipper. This isn't a huge deal.. I guess it's just annoying that I was told one thing and am now being told another. We never took the dress in, the way it fits me is exactly how it fit me the day I bought it. Everyone and their dog has buttons on the back, so I was hoping for a more clean sleek look on the back. Anyone else dealt with somethin similar? (FYI, don't mind the sleeves lol they need to be taken in.)

First off, you rock that dress! It's absolutely gorgeous. I'm sorry, though. It's definitely frustrating being told one thing just to have it retracted (I'm sure most of us on here have experienced that with one thing or another). Are you able to take it to a seamstress or somewhere different that could still make that alteration for you?

Awe haha thank you! I definitely thought about that, it just makes me nervous because I've heard horror stories and people saying to stick with the place you bought that dress from, but maybe I'll do some research and look into that option Smiley smile

I've actually never heard that! lol

I've heard lots of the opposite though. That often the shop where you bought the dress can be way overpriced for alterations. A lot of brides have sought out a local seamstress to do their alterations cheaper and faster than the bridal shops. I was going to do the same, to save money. I would just caution you to check out reviews of anyone you are considering. It can't hurt to check it out.

Yeah, I think as long as you do your research and check reviews for wherever you decide to take your dress, you should be okay!

I would reach out to a high rated local seamstress, I bought my dress yesterday & they advised me even though it fit perfectly that if I wanted the hem shortened any to find an outside seamstress because they are so booked it wouldn’t be done in time for my wedding (June 1st)

Oh wow you are stunning! Our dresses look similar! I have buttons down the back of mine as well with sleeves! I love the train and the lace on yours! I have a silk layer underneath mine! Here is a picture of mine! I thought about doing a corset back but my seamstress advised against that. She said it would be WAY expensive and ended up trying to save us some money! I wouldn't think putting a zipper in though would take as much work as a corset would. Mine actually has a zipper and buttons.

The seamstress is right you would need about 2 inches to put in a zipper due in part because of the button holes. They should have told you that in the beginning though.

Most wedding dresses have loops for buttons, not holes. You should be able to stitch an invisible zipper in along the same edges the buttons are on, as long as the buttons can be removed invisibly, and there are loops and not holes. However, it would have been better if they'd ordered a size up, to make it easier to do.

First of all, you look AMAZING! I love the buttons, but understand. Everyone has buttons. I took my dress to another tailor for a couple of reasons and she did everything I asked with no hesitation. Not sure why they wont just put a zipper on it. That's disappointing, but either way you'll look gorgeous!

Im sorry you’re dealing with an alterations issue girl! I know it’s frustrating!! You’re STUNNING in the dress though! ✨✨ and RIGHT?! I hear yah on the buttons. I also don’t care for them and feel like they’re way too popular and love the seamless flow of a zipper on mine too. Great news though no one will be looking at your buttons. ✨ 😂 they’ll be lookin at you and eyes will be drawn to your sleeves and of corse face. 👍🏻 But like someone else said on here too maybe get a second opinion from another seamstress first before you 100% throw in the towel on it?

Thank you! I unfortunately can't remember the name, but it's an Italian designer!
