30 minute gap

rica, on January 20, 2018 at 3:23 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

Our ceremony is at 5 pm. It doesn't appear that it can be pushed back much later, although I am still looking into that option. It will be a bit on the longer side and there will be a receiving line, so I expect the whole thing to be done around 5:30. It is a 25 minute drive to the 6:30 reception.

What can we do to entertain guests for the half hour gap? I wouldn't be opposed to providing light appetizers at the ceremony venue, but I also don't want to end up needing to rush out after that. Would it be appropriate to just hang out in the park where the ceremony is and chat with guests?

We had a similar issue and just started cocktail hour earlier. Originally I had planned for it to be 5-6 p.m. but the ceremony ended at 4 p.m. and was only 10 minutes away. So we started cocktail hour at 4:15 and went until 5:45. This worked great because we had plenty of apps, open bar and music so the guests were happy. The added pro of having a longer cocktail hour is we were able to mingle with all our guests and enjoy it too.

I’m a little more concerned with the 25 minute drive to the reception space. That seems like quite a distance! Honestly though, I don’t think a 30 minute gap is terrible. You could set up some light refreshments for guests but they should be aware of the time contraints.

A 5 p.m. ceremony that is on the longer side, and even with the receiving line it is over in 30 minutes? That sounds pretty short to me.

Consider adding some elements to your ceremony to make it longer.

Slow down your receiving line. Mingle more to chat after the ceremony, and then people won't leave the ceremony location closer to 6 p.m.

At least also try to make sure that people can get into the reception venue by 6:1 5 p.m.?

I would do a cocktail hour when you arrive to the reception venue, you can do it outside u til it is time to go in. But they usually work better as hours than just for 30 min so maybe push the reception back a bit. And make sure you provide drinks and apps.

Good eye! I didn't catch that about the ceremony time and then receiving line. A typical ceremony is about 30 minutes so depending on what else is added it could go 45 minutes to an hour. My ceremony was about 45 minutes, if not longer. Then we signed the marriage certificate and had pictures with our guests. I remember looking at the clock in the church and being happy we were there until 4 because I was worried about the guests getting to the reception before 4:15. So it sounds like you'll be fine with the time.

Also, 25 minutes is fine between the ceremony and reception venues. The general rule is to keep them within 30 minutes of each other.

@erias and Goodmob, thanks for pointing that out! I haven't talked to the officiant too much yet about the actual ceremony, so 30 minutes was just my best guess. Perhaps I shouldn't worry too much about the timing until I get his input first.

We definitely can't push the cocktail hour earlier without a hefty fee, but we might still be able to move the ceremony forward if necessary.
