30 - 45 min cocktail hour with no food?

Sooji, on October 7, 2019 at 2:56 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

I have a day wedding, starting at 11:30am. Hoping to finish the ceremony a bit after 12PM and have the room flip for 30-45 mins in which there will be an open bar.

We did not plan on serving food during the interim because we will be serving buffet lunch right after.

Thoughts on the no food?

Any recommendations for what to offer during that interim? like something to do? or is just drinks okay?

I’ve never attended a wedding that had a cocktail hour with no food. Can you do something light at least? Like cheese and crackers or fruit and veggie trays?

All drinks and no food can be dangerous. Even if you put out a veggie and a fruit platter or cheese and crackers, your guests may need something to nibble on while having a couple of drinks waiting to be seated for dinner.

Does it matter that it's lunch?

I would still recommend having appetizers of some sort especially if people will be drinking alcohol as the food with absord some of the alcohol. Also, by the time people are actually eating their meal it would be kind of late for a lunch so something to hold them over would be nice.

I think it's ok to not have food but like what PPs mention it can be so simple like fruit platters

No. Almost an hour of drinking without food at the beginning of a wedding reception and no food no matter what time of day is not a great idea.

I didn't have food at my cocktail hour and there was an open bar. I think it would be fine, but it's also a "know your crowd" decision.

We had a very similar schedule for our brunch wedding. For the cocktail hour we skipped butlered appetizers but had a big spread of crackers, bread, meat, cheese, olives, etc etc for people to pick at. I also looked at some options for pretzels with different mustards. See if your caterer has a good idea for stationary displays.

Unless you want people to get wasted, I'd have food. Plus, cocktail hour food is most people's favorite part of the wedding!

I've never attended a cocktail hour without food. I've been to ones with very limited food (fruits & veggies, one appetizer, etc.) and ones with tons of appetizers, but not a no food cocktail hour especially when drinks are being served. I would think guests will be super hungry from 12-12:45 so I'd probably provide a snack.

At least serve something simple like a cheese & crackers, fruit, veggies etc . Alcohol without food isn’t a good idea.

I would do something small so people have something in their stomach while they drink.

Just 45 minutes, at that time of day, people should be fine with just drinks. But make sure that coffee or tea ( hot or iced according to weather) are freely available. A lot of people do not start with alcohol at that time of day, unless during or after a meal. And you do not want to encourage downing more than a single alcoholic drink in such a short time, when people who prefer coffee or tea cannot get it. Not to mention, that liquor is so much more expensive to serve.
I have been to many weddings where during cocktail hour the only choices are soda and Alcoholic drinks. When it is barely a usual lunch time, lots of people are grumbling, wanting coffee, and to start other drinks with the pre-dinner toasts, the meal, or only after the meal.

I might do away with the open bar if there’s no food, because that can be dangerous. Unless you can provide something light to munch on. Cocktail hours typically have food. But I would suggest maybe planning on some lawn games or photos to keep everyone entertained during the interim.
