3 hours for Hmu?

Sarah, on March 7, 2018 at 4:30 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 18
I've started reaching out to HMU artists and one has replied so far and said she'd arrive three hours before I need to get into my dress. Um... Three hours?!?! What's she going to do for three hours?????? It's just me, I don't want much make up and I could do my hair myself in half an hour ????? Is this a normal amount of time? I asked FSIL and she said it took that long for her but she was wearing a lot of makeup and her hair looks more complicated than what I'd like mine to be, but I'm neither a makeup artist nor a hairdresser so can't judge really but three HOURS??

It took about an hour for my hair and an hour for my makeup. Neither was overly intricate. She’s also probably including some buffer because she isn’t going to start the second she arrives and she isn’t going to be working on your face until two seconds before you put your dress on.

Are you doing a trial? This would give you a clear vision of how long it actually will take.

    Thanks Sarah! That was helpful.

Not sure if I'll do a trial, it costs the same amount as the actual day and she lives in a different city (where we're getting married). I did want to but it's a lot of money to pay twice.

I mean my hair took 2.5 hours so...doesn't seem crazy to me.

Yep, this is totally standard. Each will take a good chunk of time, and you'll want PLENTY of buffer time in case anything goes wrong - either can take longer than expected, if you decide you don't love something and want it changed, curling iron goes on the fritz, etc. Smiley smile

ETA - There's also setup time that will be required for both, especially makeup. That'll eat up probably 10-15 min.

My hair took over 2 hours and makeup about an hour so I'm not surprised.

It's probably including a cushion as another PP said. My HMUA took about 2 hours, 1 hour for my hair and 1 hour for makeup. I highly recommend doing a trial first so you both know what works and what doesn't ahead of time.

Thank you everyone! I feel relieved that it's pretty standard though still in disbelief a bit!

My hair and makeup took about 2 hours. So that seems right. We had to be ready to go to the venue at 2:45PM and the HMUA team (of 4) showed up at 8:45AM and were busy non stop until about 2:00PM

Mine took about two hours. My hair wasn't overly complicated. My photographer actually estimated that I should be getting ready for 4 hours. My HMUA was there with her team at 6 am, and we were done by 11:30 am. There were 11 of us and four of them.

Seems right. Its going to take her time to set up, unpack her tools, find proper lighting and seating to do her work in your space. We basically rearranged our hotel room so she and the MUA had the best possible lighting and enough plugs nearby to work with. Then prepping your hair and face. They aren't going to rush through. And if there is something about it you don't like, you'll have time for her to tweak it to the way you want. Especially if you aren't doing a trial. Although my hair was totally different than my trial, but I had enough time for her to do what I wanted and make changes.

3 hours is the minimum buffer she should boom your day for. That is good timing, in my opinion I would want her there 4 hours before. I used to do makeup and hair and tons of unexpected delays always happened. I didn't mind just standing by knowing I had the time needed to finish without rushing regardless of what came up.

Buffet time for sure; needs time to set up, and then do your hair and makeup. It's was an hour or so on my makeup, and about 40 minutes or so for my hair. Plus, I paid my MUA to stay until the ceremony for touch ups.

You should definitely do a trial run to get a feel for what's going down on your big day. 3 hours seem extreme but it may just be just in case room
