1ST CAKE TASTING! What to expect and ask...

Rachel, on September 6, 2013 at 3:02 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

Hi ladies! FH and I are going to our first potential baker tomorrow. We are very excited but we wanted to know

(1) What should we expect the first meeting to be like?

(2) What important questions should we ask?

I am bringing pictures with me of what I want the cake to be. Pretty simple. I have my budget. We are going to Fancy Cakes by Leslie in Bethesda, MD (if anyone has used her).

Thanks for your advice and thoughts!

When is the cake actually made, put together and when will it be delivered that day.

What is actually used to make the cake and it's fillings. I worked at a bakery that used crisco in their buttercream. Though it made more stable, I just found it gross.

Eat something, so you don't have a sugar high. The first one I went to, I left with a headache, LOL. Also take pictures of your possible design. We went with Woodlea Bakery on Belair Rd. We told her what we wanted even our budget. Be vocal on what you want and don't want. Have fun and eat cake! *agrees with Out the Window. And if any of the icings has nuts in it(my son is allergic and I know some buttercream icing is made with almond flavoring).

    We asked:

    - If they deliver and if so, what the fee is

    - Who sets the cake up on-site

    - If there's an extra charge for any particular fillings

    - If they can suggest flavors that will complement your dinner menu (if you have that picked out) or are in season for your time of year

    - If there's an extra charge for any particular decorations to the cake (i.e. fondant, sugar flowers, chocolate pieces, etc.)

    - What the cost would be by using sheet cakes vs. tiered cake (like one large tiered cake vs. one small tiered cake and enough sheet cakes to supplement your guest list)

    - What size their cake servings are (one place may say a serving is a 1"x2" piece, another may say a 2"x3" piece; one may do two layers, another may do three; and so on, and it's all different amounts of cake you're paying for)

    Calories,

no just kidding; this is a great question. I'm booking my in two weeks, we were told to go to their website & pick out 3 difference cakes. It's a $30.00 charge for 4 people.

I loved cake tastings. They were so much fun! We basically just told them how many guests there were going to be, and the basic design we were going for (shape, number of tiers, any special elements, etc). They sketched up a picture as we were talking. Then we decided on flavors based on what we had tasted. Then they told us what it would cost. They were pretty up front about all of the details. If the bakery is used to doing a lot of wedding cakes, they should be able to provide you with a sample contract. Our tasting was free at one bakery, the other was $10, which then went toward your cake if you decided to choose them as your baker.
