14k white gold vs 18k white gold vs platinum?

Amber, on September 15, 2013 at 5:16 AM Posted in Planning 0 18

We're ordering FH's ring and want to know opinions! We're debating 14k white gold vs 18k white gold vs platinum. What do you think? What did you and your partner choose for yours/their ring material? Why?

Need responses ASAP! Thanks Smiley smile

We are both doing platinum because it is really the most durable and won't really need much maintenance. They seem a bit sturdier and solid too. You won't need it re-plated either. It's more expensive but I figure over a lifetime it's worth it. Some others might say it isn't worth the extra cost but I guess it's a place we want to splurge.

If you can afford it platinum, all day, everyday. 18k thereafter.

We did 18K in my e-ring and band and 14K on his band because platinum was too expensive and we wanted to spend more on the quality of the diamonds.

We did platinum because we thought it would be more worthwhile to pay the upfront cost than have to worry about the maintenance costs of gold and so forth in the future. White gold can shift to yellow and you may have to get it replated each year (I've heard that can cost about $75 each time.) Also platinum does not wear away like gold does. If you scratch platinum, the metal just shifts instead of wearing off. So with gold you may need to get your band reshanked. We have busy lives so neither of us wanted to deal with taking our rings to the jeweler and paying for those maintenance costs. Platinum is a higher upfront cost but there is a lot less maintenance.

We're doing platinum for FH's ring. My stepdad's a jeweler and said the prices are pretty comparable to gold right now and it'll hold the white / silver color better. White gold has to be redipped occasionally.

Platinum won't change color. Is more durable than gold. Less chance of losing stones. The best jewelry has always been made with platinum.

18K gold is softer than 14K gold because it is more pure. 14K has other materials to make it more durable. 18K is fine for earrings & necklaces, but not so good for rings.

My platinum rings are from the 1930s and have held up very well.

We're doing platinum. Like Allyson said, white gold has to be touched up eventually.

We did palladium because it's hypoallergenic and cheaper than platinum. I have read that it's "in the platinum family" but I'm not quite sure what that's supposed to mean

I have 14k white gold. I tried on a Platinum band, and it was so heavy, not to mention expensive.

My jeweler does the retouching of the rodine for free when you buy with them

My rings are platinum (engagement and wedding) but FH wanted tungsten carbide so I got him 4 different styles (in case he loses one).

Platinum scratches very easily. We are getting 14K white gold.

My e-ring is 14k white gold, wedding band is 10k.. so far I think the 10K holds up much better and is scratching/wearing down less. obviously I've been wearing it for less time than the e-ring, but I did have the e-ring replated shortly before our wedding and it's already showing yellow. H's ring is cobalt carbide, and is supposed to stand up much better--so far it's still very shiny and no scratches!

Platinum costs more to fix/maintain on top being more expensive. If your FH works with his hands a lot or is outdoorsy I'd go with 14k or 10k gold cuz it's a little sturdier. I got DH a 14k and it's already pretty rough looking(his hobby is fixing boats including motors) IDK if 24k would last too long.

Platinum rings for engagement ring and weddings bands for both. Most durable and doesn't fade over time. White gold will become yellowish over time. 18K is used for fine jewelry, which 14K gold is more every day wear. 24K is too soft for fine jewelry. Do not get 24K gold. There are other choices for the guys: cobalt, titanium, pallidum, and etc.

We went with platinum because it is simply the best to hold over time. I plan on wearing my wedding band for at least 60 more years. =)

We all know the difference in the metal the price & durability.

Because my FH's line of work, he's not allow to wear jewelry. He will be taking his wedding band off & placing it in his locker (the blackhole) daily. This is why I got him a tungsten band.

I like & have both white gold & platinum jewelry which I mix & match.

My FH love the look of the buttery yellow gold; I'm going to surprise him with a 6mm diamond wedding band for special occasions & holidays.

You should choose your metal based on your lifestyle & budget, this is truly a personal choice.
