$125 cake tasting fee!?

Allyssa, on February 13, 2018 at 9:17 AM Posted in Planning 0 38
A local vegan bakery said their tasting fee is $125, and none of that goes towards a deposit or balance of the cake, has anyone heard of such a high fee!?

That does seem high to me, though our venue is making our cake, so it was part of our regular tasting and we got it for free. I'm not sure what is standard for fees when working with a bakery. Can you just order some different cupcakes from them and taste those? I can't imagine a few cupcakes would be $125.

I did not have to pay for any cake tastings! That’s almost as much as my entire cake!

That's definitely high IMO. We only looked at two bakeries that charged a fee - one only charged it if we did not show up for the tasting to cover the cost of the food lost, and the other charged a fee that came off our total bill if we booked with them. both times the fee was only 25$. I would expect a fee for specialized cake like Vegan to be slight higher but certainly not over 100$. I would continue to look around.

Wow! I have no idea if that's normal for a vegan bakery, but our cake tasting was free. Once again though, it wasn't a vegan bakery so I'm honestly not sure. That's still pretty high though, I would think.

I would ask them about it... it can't be the first time they have heard this. Maybe see if you can put it towards the deposit or see if you can taste fewer flavors for a lower price? That seems very high.

I paid $20 for a cake tasting but it applied to our order when we schedule...$125 is VERY high. Is that comparable to other bakeries in your area?

I asked if it goes towards the deposit, the owner said no, it’s just for the tasting, period.

We didn't pay for any of our tastings. That just doesn't seem right.

It's probably because they're such a niche business.

IMO, fees are what they are. You can either pay it or move on. Such is life.

That’s crazy! You could get almost an entire cake for that price... something fishy here.

That's CRAZY. Do they operate as a retail business as well? Can you just like, buy some cupcakes in different flavors and taste them that way? How much do the cakes go for?

Have you looked into Whole Foods for their vegan cakes?

With a fee that high, it sounds like they really don't want to do wedding cakes, doesn't it?

    Wow.

I guess maybe because they are a specialty bakery? Ours was $25 which went towards the cake.

If the fee just to taste the cake is $125, how much would your actual cake be?

Definitely look at Whole Foods, they have tons of vegan desserts!

Our Whole Foods gets their very few vegan offerings from this bakery. I’m posting on different local vegan forums now for other options. Thank you everyone for the input, I thought that was very high.

Wow, seems outrageous to me! I would look for a different, more realistic vendor.

Seems like they want to charge that high because then you kinda feel obligated (I would) to stay with them since its that huge amount and it would go towards your deposit.

That’s the thing though, it doesn’t go towards the deposit at all! That’s my biggest issue with it.

$125 to try a few flavours of cake is ridiculous. Especially if this place does a lot of the baked goods for Whole Foods. At that price, you'd be better to have a whole bunch of friends over and buy a few small vegan cakes they make from whole foods and try them.
