12 year old flower girl?

Heather, on March 7, 2014 at 12:02 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

Hi everyone! So I have 8 nieces and nephews and I am trying to incorporate all of them into my wedding. My 2 oldest nieces are bridesmaids (ages 18 and 15). My oldest nephews I am planning to ask to be ushers (ages 23 and 16). Then I was thinking of having the other four serve as 2 flower girls and 2 ring bearers. 3 of them will be 8 or 9 years old but one flower girl would be 12. Is that too old? She is the older sister of the other flower girl so I thought I could tell her that she would be leading her sister...

I think 12 is too old. My 13 year old cousin is a bridesmaid.

Some brides here had said they were flower girls at 12 and felt embarrassed.

12 is too old to be a FG. Have you cONSIdered asking her to be a Jr BM?

IMO when you get into double digit ages, that signals that they are too old to be flower girls. Junior BM would be my best suggestion

It's sweet of you to want to include them all! I agree though, Jr. Bridesmaid would be more appropriate, and I'm sure she would appreciate that more.

I was a bridesmaid in my aunts wedding when I was like 12.. I remember feeling out of place & awkward, and I look miserable in all of the pictures. (Im sure it had nothing to do with the hideous dress they put me in) lol. I think JR bridesmaid would be best too Smiley smile

I think your niece would be much happier being a Jr. BM. She's almost a teenager, which, to her, probably feels grown up. I would ask her to be a Jr.

12 is too old. Honestly, 8 and 9 are pushing it for the RBs.

Well my 11 year old cousin will be a flower girl and her 4 year old brother is going to be a flower boy, so I think it's fine.

I'll add to the consensus: anything over 9 is too old and she is guaranteed to feel like an idiot. FH has a 12 year old sister and there's no way in hell she'd want to be a flower girl.

I think it really just depends on the bride. When my sister got married, her ringbearer was 14 and her flower girls were 5 and 13. the 13 year old girl was actually very happy to be a flower girl, and grinned ear to ear the whole way down the aisle. She wore a white lace dress.

Going with the consensus. I was 10 and a flowergirl and felt like an idiot.

My flower girl will be 12. We asked her sister who is 8 and she wanted to do it too. She's really excited about it. I think it depends on the girl. Some may be uncomfortable and some may like the idea.

I was going to ask my brother to be the RB until I realized he will be 14 1/2...(When did that happen?!?! lol)

Now we have no RB and FH's niece will be the flower girl and she will be 6. We didn't even ask her. When her mom told her we were getting married, she came up to me and whispered in my ear (like a 4 year old does) "Can I throw flowers when you marry uncle Topher??" Apparently she went to a wedding with her mom not too long ago and she was jealous of the FG at that wedding because "she got to wear a pretty dress". HAHA I love little kids.

I know that everyone thinks 12 is too old for a FG. Personally I do not. So long as you are not expecting her to wear a white poofy dress. My FG is 12 and she will be wearing a short version of my BM dresses. I really wanted a flower girl, she was super excited about. I don't care what "etiquette" says about this. I follow all the other "rules" so I have no problem breaking this one Smiley smile

My wedding date was changed from 6/27/15 to 7/16/16. I originally had my daughter (who would've been 11 on our original date) as my flower girl. She will be 12 on 7/16/16. I askwd her if she would rather be a junior bridesmaid instead of a flower girl and she nearly burst into tears. She ia dead set on being a flower girl. Her mind may change by then but as of now she is happy to be a flower girl.

It depends on what the child thinks normal flower girls are ages 3-9 and a junior brides maids are usually ages 10-16 but thats just the average but if I was the 12 year old I would totally feel embarrassed but what ever you think.

So my soon to be sister in law wants me to be a flower girl and I am 13. I feel kinda weird because you usually see little girls be the flower girl. I'd rather be a bridesmaid
