How long should a reception Last?

As of right now, we were planning on doing the reception from 5pm-10pm... how long should a reception typically last? Is 5 hours a lot? (Granted an hour of that is a cocktail hour!) thank you
Grooms family is not putting in any effort or care in the wedding...what do i do?
