I want to help plan my friend's wedding but her soon to be mother-in-law has dictated everything, my friend thinks we could do a separate ceremony (a fun one and a official one) but I am confused about this. Help?

I was thinking, instead of a guest book we could have a giant banner with a cup of sharpies for people to sign and doodle on. Thoughts?
