Delicious Food, Wonderful People, and the Perfect Touch to Our Beach Wedding
Our intimate Outer Banks beach wedding was everything we could have ever hoped for—and the food and drinks were a huge part of that magic, thanks to this incredible catering team and bartender!
From the very first bite, our guests were raving—and they haven’t stopped since. We had a lot of New Englanders in the Outer Banks for the first time and they could not stop talking about the crab cakes and seafood. The food was absolutely delicious, beautifully presented, and thoughtfully chosen to match our relaxed, coastal vibe. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful. And the portions! We had so many leftovers (packed with care), which meant we got to enjoy our wedding food again after the wedding!
The service was just as impressive. The catering staff was warm, professional, and attentive without ever being intrusive. Making sure the bride and groom ate and drank during cocktail hour was truly thoughtful. Steve, our bartender, was amazing, friendly, and made an amazing freshly squeezed orange crush! The planning crew was so accommodating to us adding and making changes up until the week before our wedding. Everyone made it so easy to have the most amazing day and we so appreciate it.

We used the Black Pelican for our wedding and the food and service was wonderful. Everyone at the wedding enjoyed the food. The rosemary lamb chops were the bride and grooms favorite along with most of the guests. 10/10 we highly recommend!

Arnett Wedding rehearsal dinner.
What can we say about the people and food from Black Pelican Catering. They absolutely exceeded expectations for our rehearsal dinner in the Outer Banks. Everything was fresh, hot, organized, and beautifully set up. The burgers, hot dogs, and sides were crowd favorites, and the toppings bar was stocked with everything you could want — fresh onions, tomatoes, lettuce, pickles, and more. The burgers and hot dogs were flavorful and cooked perfectly, and there was more than enough food for everyone. The brownies for desert were a huge hit as well! On top of the awesome food and set up, what really stood out was the professionalism and ease of the entire catering experience. Delivery and setup were smooth, the presentation looked great, and it made hosting stress-free so everyone could actually enjoy the event instead of worrying about food prep. The quality and attention to detail of the Black Pelican Catering team matched the relaxed but memorable vibe that makes the Outer Banks special.

Amazing Wedding Catering!

Candlelit Dinner
My husband and I were so happy with the service of the Black Pelican! Not only were they responsive to my questions and patient, they were very flexible with the minimal light we had outside during dinner! As frustrating as that could have been, they served us and our guests happily using phone lights! They went above and beyond to make sure guests got their food! Not to mention, their food was delicious! Everyone especially loved the appetizers we picked! We definitely give the Black Pelican a 5 star rating!

Used them for a retirement ceremony. They were on time, the food was immaculate and delicious, and the servers were friendly and professional.
My wife and I hired Black Pelican for my retirement after-party and they were incredible. It was wildly hot that day, but they showed up right on time, cooked all the food in the truck (I believe), brought everything in to the A/C through a 96F space, never complained, were very friendly, and even boxed up the food for leftovers for us prior to departing. I'm not even a seafood fan, but the shrimp tacos were, hands down, the best taco I've ever had! Black Pelican was worth every penny!

Welcome Party Hors d'Oeuvres at the Pine Island Lodge
The Black Pelican helped us kick off our wedding weekend, and they did not disappoint! Their team passed around a variety of delicious small bites, and our guests absolutely loved them. The crab bites were a crowd favorite, but I personally couldn’t get enough of the Mozzarella-Stuffed Risotto Balls. Their team was efficient, organized, and completely in control of the evening. I’m so happy we chose them!

My husband and I just had our wedding on Thursday. We had a destination wedding and put our faith in Black Pelican by booking without a tasting. Let me tell you, they did not disappoint! Many of our guests commented that it was some of the best wedding food that they have ever had. The steaks, salmon, and chicken were tender and cooked wonderfully. The green beans were bright green and tender-crispy. Our family fought over the leftovers for the crab rangoons and mac and cheese bites. The staff was professional and our guests were satisfied that we could accommodate their dietary restrictions. I would highly recommend Black Pelican if you are planning a destination wedding and don't have the means to travel for a tasting before your event! 100/10!

Food was great, service excellent, organizing and creating the event was as easy and team was so helpful. They worked with our budget and responded quickly to any and all questions and changes we had and made. I would highly recommend Black Pelican and staff!! Jenn and Summer made it happen!! Meredith rocked getting the food out and drinks to all guest!! Clean up they made easy and all guest were satisfied with service!! The food was to die for!! We recommend the bacon wrapped scallops and mini crab cakes for apps as well as prime rib for entree!! The mixed veggies went well with both baked chicken and prime rib!! Bread and salad was fresh!! Great choice to cater our wedding and we also had a rehearsal lunch there. Lunch was fantastic, they accommodated us as a large group and enjoyed the drinks and meal. The wedding was a hit! Black Pelican provided truly delicious food for our wedding! Our guests gave us rave reviews, and backed that up by fighting over leftovers the next night at the house! Beyond the high quality food, they also provided great service throughout the planning process. Their catering team is very quick to respond via email and phone, and was always helpful answering all of my questions. Our tasting was so much fun, and genuinely helpful as we made our menu selections. The food that Black Pelican provided for our Daughter's wedding was excellent. Everything tasted great and looked spectacular. And they proved their flexibility since we had to change venue due to the weather at the last minute and there were raging thunderstorms during the event. The Best Food and Service
The Black Pelican Catering team was amazing! Jen was great and easy to work with. She was super responsive and thoroughly answered all of our questions along the way! They also offer more than just the food which is super helpful. We were able to secure our rentals through Black Pelican as well which made things easier for us. We did onsite services and couldn't have been happier with the food and the service. Everything we ate was delicious and the servers felt like part of our friends and family. They did a great job setting up everything and they also cleaned up which was a huge help!

Incredible food!
The food from Black Pelican was absolutely amazing! Our guests still rave about how good our wedding food was weeks after the wedding. We had salmon w/ honey chipotle bbq glaze, chicken w/ tarragon riesling sauce, mashed potatoes, rustic veggie blend, and a garden salad. Appetizers were mozzarella risotto balls w/ marinara sauce, crab-less cakes, fresh fruit kabobs, and tomato bruschetta. The ladies who worked the buffet at the wedding were very kind and even offered to make my plate!
The best part about Black Pelican is they even cater to different dietary needs/restrictions. Being a vegan, sometimes it can be difficult to find a good, well-balanced meal and especially difficult when trying to plan a wedding meal that everyone can enjoy! Black Pelican made this process so easy. I told them I was vegan and they sent me their vegan catering menu. I was shocked that they had this! I had crab-less cakes as my main entree (they were so delicious and even my guests enjoyed them!) They were able to make the mashed potatoes vegan as well. So, I was able to have a delicious vegan meal while my guests wee able to enjoy their meal with salmon and/or chicken. Thank you, Black Pelican for considering people’s dietary needs! This was one of the main reasons why we booked with them. I cannot recommend Black Pelican enough!

The food from Black Pelican was just perfect. Yes, we had leftovers for days and yes we totally ate ALL of our leftovers. The food was just superior from other vendors we tested out. Also, the serious was amazing from all the waiters who were walking around making sure people had what they need all the way to the bar. Our guest just loved the bar and how the bartenders were so positive. Also, our apps were gone before we even entered the venue after we took photos so if that does not say how great the food is I do not know what does. And definitely had a tasting before your wedding because even during COVID Jennifer acted as our waiter so we could get to know her!

Black Pelican is the place to book for all of your catering needs. We booked them for our wedding food and we do not regret it. You are given a sufficient amount of food for buffet style and the food is amazing. Our guests could not stop raving about the food. Must haves are the chicken wings and chocolate fountain. Yes they have a chocolate fountain!!! The customer service was amazing and the girls that came to work my wedding were nothing but wonderful. They were flexible and easy to work with especially when our wedding got postponed due to COVID.

All the food
When your husband eats like a teenager, black pelican has everything type of food you can imagine. We had to keep it picky people safe for mostly my husband but everyone enjoyed the food especially the crab cake appetizer! I did have two guests that needed special food one was delivered and the other was vegan plate that didn’t end up at the wedding but she was able to eat other things. So double check to make sure if you have guests that are vegan or have food allergies but overall the food was super yummy!

More than expected!
Our wedding food was more than I ever imagined! It was so delicious and we got a large quantity... there was definitely enough for our guests plus some! And EVERYTHING was yummy, there isn't one thing on our menu that I wasn't pleased with. Those crab cakes and the shrimp dip were the stars of the show. We live in Pennsylvania so I wasn't able to do a tasting before hand but I relied on their good reviews and its all true they are the best on the beach for a reason. Honestly the quality was worth what we spent on the food. I would use their catering again in the future and recommend to other brides this is the place to go. I was so happy to be able to serve our guests that traveled so far to be with us, an impressive meal... and we sent some of them home with leftovers! Thank you for being a highlight of our wedding.

We have been coming to the outer banks for years and knew that the Black Pelican was who we wanted to cater our Obx wedding! From the very beginning, Jennifer and the rest of the Black Pelican catering team were professional, responsive, and very easy to work with. They answered all of our many questions and made sure we had everything we needed for the day of! Even when we had to change plans last minute because of Covid, their team did so flawlessly. Not only is the Black Pelican catering team fantastic to work with, the food is out of this world!! Our guests are still raving about the meal! The food is top notch for a great price. My experience with them was stress free and super organized. When my husband and I went to the tasting, they were so polite and attentive. They also let us take home leftovers so we could enjoy their great food later. I'm so happy Tony Joseph (Idoobxweddings), our officiant, recommended them. They had the biggest variety to pick from than any other vendor I have seen. They delivered right on time for the reception. They are timely, organized, polite, and had an amazing selection of high quality foods. Their chef knows how to create some great dishes and combines great flavors.

Jennifer and Summer were extremely responsive and helpful prior to the wedding day. We ended up doing a pie table with pies from the Black Pelican instead of a wedding cake and the guests loved it. Guest still raving about food!
Went to a food tasting and it was out of this world! Myself and two others were very pleasured with the quality and flavor of the food. Sometimes food isn't the same day of, but I can't tell you how many people complimented the food. Everyone came from at least 6hours away and they all were super pleased. No a single bad thing was said regarding the catering. Bartender was quick to provided asked for drinks. The employees were attentive to guests. During the process leading up to the wedding, the catering team was quick to reply to emails and provide tons of feedback and recommendations. Even when not getting alcohol from them, they recommended a way for me to calculate the amount needed. Everything with this company is amazing. They even worked with me during the payment process. For example, I made the final payment on time only to realize I had forgotten to include my husband and myself, it was no issue to add the two of us and apply the new total/payment. I would absolutely recommend this company to everyone getting married! If I had to do it all over, I would choose them again to cater my wedding!

Couldn't of been happier with the food from Black Pelican for my wedding day. Many of my guests came up to me to tell me that it was the best food they've ever had at a wedding! I'm a chef from up in Michigan so letting go and letting another company completely take care of the food for my wedding was really hard, but they did not disappoint!! They will also work with you on the menu and make modifications to fit what you want, I adjusted the salad and a dressing and the butter on our steak and they did everything exactly how I wanted. Couldn't be happier with the food and service that night!! If you are from another state and are looking for a caterer, GO WITH BLACK PELICAN!! You will be so happy and relieved that you did!

We hired the Black Pelican for a delivery to cater our wedding and it was one of the best choices we made! Everyone at our reception was raving about the food and there was barely any left. The title says it all! It's just an added bonus that it happened to be our wedding! Seriously, the whole Black Pelican crew are amazing. The show up and work so hard. The food is fresh and delicious. They clean it all up and leave whatever food is left in organized containers for you to take with you. If you are unable to taste test because you are booking a destination wedding then you are in great hands with Black Pelican. They give you exactly what you want and customize the menu to whatever YOU want to serve. We had so many of our guests reach out to tell us how amazing the food was.

Black Pelican catered our Rehearsal Dinner for our son’s wedding on October of 2018. The entire experience with Black Pelican, from the planning stages through the final cleanup up at the venue was outstanding and we are delighted to say, in a word, “Perfect” in every way”. The food was excellently prepared and served, our guests loved the menu
(North Carolina Barbecue Package) and most importantly, our son, the groom and our daughter-in-law, the bride, were very happy with the evening, from the food and drink, the ambiance, slide show, to the venue and the excellent work provided by the Black Pelican employees, the servers, the waiters, and the bar tender. The Black Pelican is very familiar with the venues available in the Outer Banks and works very well with the venue planners to make sure deliveries, set up and more are within the stands set by the venues. We strongly recommend Black Pelican to anyone considering a caterer for any event. Their catering menu is extensive, the prices are very reasonable, the food is delicious and the entire staff is helpful, and the catering planners are knowledgeable and able to make on point suggestions during the planning process to help you along the way as you plan and consider options. After contacting numerous caterers and attending several tastings, we found Black Pelican. Being that I am a bit of a food snob and enjoy cooking myself, our guests expected to have great food at our wedding and they did. Everyone loved the food. Not only do they have great food but the Black Pelican team is awesome! They were extremely helpful and quickly responded to all of my emails throughout the planning process. The servers and bartender on the day of were fantastic. They were all super attentive, friendly and professional. We had Black Pelican Catering cater our October wedding and received nothing but praise from our guests. From the appetizers served during cocktail hour to the main courses and sides. Everything was excellent. The servers were professional, attentive, and went above and beyond; even rushing out to patio where someone had tripped and dropped there food to help clean it up. Would recommend them for any type of special event.

This team really was amazing! They offered several tastings, because we went back and forth on our choices several times. They were VERY responsive to all our questions, helped with planning, and most importantly, the food was amazing! And for the price, you can't beat it. We served our tables family style, which I highly recommend! Thanks guys!

My husband and I got married in May of 2017, and selected Black Pelican to cater our event-home reception based on their reviews, word of mouth from a few friends, and their reasonable pricing. We went with pulled pork/chicken, deviled eggs, mac-n-cheese, green beans, and potato salad. I have been to many wedding with a similar spread, and this was hands down the most delicious pulled pork I've ever tasted. Everyone was raving about the food the entire night, and I still have family members and friends talking about how good it was. The servers was so friendly and attentive. We did not have an event planner, but with very little direction, they were able to figure out where to set up the food, bar, etc. They also took charge of notifying each table when it was their turn to come up to the buffet line. Apparently the ice drawer had not produced enough ice and they were offered to run out to the store to get bags of ice for the bar mid-reception! Not only did they provide our food and bartender, but they took care of ordering all of our rentals (tables, chairs, linens, ceremony arch, etc.) I emailed them a list of our desired rentals, and they took care of the rest. I made so many modifications/additions throughout the planning process and asked many, many questions and they were equally friendly and responsive to every email that I sent. I would recommend Black Pelican to anyone planning a wedding in the area, whether for a rehearsal dinner or a reception. The quantity and quality of food, as well as the professionalism of the staff, is truly worth every penny!

I am beyond amazed and grateful for the service that we received from Renee and the Black Pelican Staff. Our wedding was during the week that Hurricane Matthew hit the OBX in October 2016. Not only was Renee diligent about keeping up communication with me, they were willing to move our wedding to the day before our scheduled date if needed! Luckily it didn't come down to that and we had the wedding during the planned day, however just knowing that they would be willing to move our wedding to the day before with 1 day warning provided relief that this bride in meltdown mode desperately needed.
The food was absolutely delicious! We ended up having shrimp n' grits tasting spoons, NY strip steak with Gouda crema tasting forks, and mozzarella stuffed risotto balls for passed appetizers., bacon wrapped scallops with vidalia puree, crab cakes, and Riesling chicken for our entrees, and rosemary potatoes and roasted Tuscan veggies for sides. The staff was very professional and attentive AND calm despite a Hurricane barreling down on their homes just 12 hours after our reception ended. I would HIGHLY recommend the Black Pelican for your OBX event.

Renee and her staff were amazing. From the tasting to the catering service to the food quality. Highly highly recommend. We did a buffet style and the bartender option. The bartender was amazing. I was too busy getting ready to direct the staff on where the drinks were and they set everything up perfectly. All the staff was so nice and friendly. They even brought us appetizers on the beach during the formal photos while everyone was inside at the reception. They were wonderful :)

The ladies at Black Pelican Catering were awesome to work with as an out of town bride! The menu was flexible and easy to create a classy menu within my budget. Anytime I contacted to ask a question or make payments, it was quickly responded to and handled. The day was seamless with a chef onsite, serving staff, and cleanup crew requiring little over site. We were able to focus on getting ready and having them prepare amazing food for our guests. The food was AMAZING!!!

Black Pelican was amazing!! They catered my beach wedding in August and I would recommend them to anyone! I planned my wedding from out of state so I had never met anyone from Black Pelican or tasted the food. But, I was not disappointed! Linda helped me through the entire process and allowed me to change my mind several times. The food was amazing and we had leftovers for days. Many people commented on how delicious it was--especially the mashed potato bar. Renee was there at our event to supervise and she was wonderful, as were the servers and bartender. I was most impressed with how kind everyone was and felt they went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of. I was so impressed and could not have been happier.

We had the black pelican cater for us after our beach wedding and it was perfect! The staff and the food was phenomenal and there was something that everyone liked. We loved it so much we went back to the restaurant later in the week. Love it!

We had a 3 couple vow renewal ceremony just for family. On relatively short notice the folks at Black Pelican Catering contacted us with their offerings. They worked with us to set up a menu to feed 18 people from kids to teenagers to grandparents. The food was outstanding, although probably too much as we had a lot of leftovers. They were on time, efficient and very clean in setting everything up and the tear down afterwards.. The food was hot when it was supposed to be and came with all the appropriate sauces. We would highly recommend Black Pelican Catering and would use them again when we are back in the Outer Banks.

Linda and her team did an excellent job catering our wedding reception. We knew the food was going to be delicious after we had our tasting about a month and a half before the wedding. They were on time, were flexible with their setup based on our limited space, and cleaned up the area so well you couldn't even tell they were there. All my guests loved the food and we had a TON of leftovers, which unfortunately we had to waste since all of our guests left town the day after the wedding.

We hired Black Pelican for our wedding because my parents love to eat there when in the Outer Banks. Being that I'm not from that area, I chose them based on reputation. We worked with Linda (mainly) and Erica (some.) Every one we spoke with at Black Pelican was completely professional. They were affordable and they treated us like a priority, not just another order number. Every time I spoke with anyone from Black Pelican, they made me feel as if they were so excited about our event and their commitment to making it a perfect experience.
When the big day came a few weeks ago, they were AWESOME! They were on time, they were highly professional and our guests could not stop commenting on how wonderful the food was! We chose blackened beef medallions, mahi, crab cakes, potatoes and mixed veggies, crackers and cheese and a garden salad. It was absolutely wonderful!!
We were very pleased with our choice and would absolutely suggest the Black Pelican to cater anyone's event. My mouth still waters thinking of the beef medallions... my only regret is that I didn't put more of them on my plate because our guests finished them all off before I could have seconds! ha!

First off, this review isn't really for the catering side of Black Pelican, but more for the restaurant. But they were such a big and great part of our big day, that I wanted to make sure I could let everyone else know how impressed we were with them! We had a small wedding, just 14 guests, and after the wedding we all wanted to go to dinner. I didn't want catering or anything for such a small group, but after I read some online reviews, Black Pelican stuck out as a very well respected restaurant. They were very easy to work with, just one phone call set up the dinner for our group. They let me bring our wedding cake for desert and supplied plates and forks without charging any type of fee, which was great. Everyone RAVED about their food, from the risotto, to the grilled mahi mahi, to the ahi tuna, to the clambakes, to the fried fish, to the pasta. No one was disappointed, and the atmosphere was wonderful. The waitress was fantastic, and my husband and I both were amazed at how quickly a group as large as ours got service, both for empty drinks and how fast the food came out. If you need a place for a large group, or even a small wedding party like ours, The Black Pelican is perfect, and will be a staple visit for all of our OBX trips in the future! :)

We booked Black Pelican for both our rehearsal dinner and our wedding reception. The rehearsal dinner was held upstairs in their restaurant, and we were able to have the whole room for our party. I cannot say enough good things about the ladies at Black Pelican and how wonderful our experience with them was. They are fabulous!!! They went above and beyond my expectations, and we are so happy we chose to work with them on our wedding day. They were extremely responsive - usually responding to my emails within an hour. They were always there when I had last minute questions or concerns. The food was excellent, and we had SO many compliments on the food at our wedding reception. They even decorated the restaurant tables for our rehearsal dinner and provided decorative signs and starfish on our wedding buffet without any extra fee. They were very attentive to my husband and me throughout our wedding reception - constantly making sure we had food and drinks and anything else we needed/wanted. I would recommend Black Pelican catering to anyone who wants a fabulous OBX wedding experience!!!

The Black Pelican did an excellent job catering our Outer Banks wedding! The food was incredible! The staff were very professional and extremely polite. The set up looked so good and they were on top of everything! The bartender did a terrific job as well. They all knew exactly what they were doing and when to do it. Everything went so smoothly! I felt they all went above and beyond expectations! I definitely recommend the Blank Pelican for any catering needs!

Black Pelican served a plated dinner for 130 people at our wedding. The food was INCREDIBLE! I had people coming up to me days later commenting on how good their filet or fish was! In addition to appetizers, we also had late night snacks of macaroni and cheese, pulled pork sliders, french fries, and spinach dip. Everything was perfect! Emily was so responsive and so, so flexible! We changed our minds a million times, and she was able to accommodate us no matter what! I had so many people compliment on how professional and kind our bartenders were, too. Overall, it was a great experience, and I couldn't have imagined the day with anyone but Black Pelican!

Emily from Black Pelican was great! She was very responsive and had so many great ideas for our wedding. I cannot even begin to tell you how many rave reviews and compliments we received on the food at our wedding. Everyone kept saying that the food was better then any wedding they had ever been to. Emily was such a wonderful help! She was so kind, helpful, flexible and amazing. The food was delicious, everyone was talking about it non stop! Emily had her staff serve champagne to all of our guest as they walked up the steps to our wedding, everyone said they had never seen anyone that great. My poor little nieces were starving after we took our photos and they had already moved the appetizers back into the kitchen, they very graciously made a plate for my nieces so they could have some crackers and cheese before we ate. Emily was lovely and we can't wait to eat at the black pelican on our first anniversary! They are a little more than the others, but so so so so worth it.

Black Pelican just catered my rehearsal dinner for my OBX wedding and we absolutely LOVED them! We selected the NC BBQ dinner, and it was exactly what we wanted. The pork BBQ sandwiches and macaroni and cheese were particular favorites among our guests. We were so sorry we didn't have them do the reception as well!

I can't say enough about the Black Pelican. I planned my wedding from Virginia, never ate at the Black Pelican, took recommendations from the Catering Mgr, and everything turned out PERFECT. They were responsive and very easy to work with.
I had more of a DIY wedding at one of the beach homes on the 4x4 beach. The Black Pelican delivered the food to the end of the paved road, one of my family members met them & transfered the food, and we dropped it into nice steam trays I already owned. The food was delivered at 5 p.m. and we didn't actually get to eat until 8 p.m. I was fearfull the food would taste horrible after 3 hours of sitting in the steam trays but it was FANTASTIC. On request, the Black Pelican undercooked my steaks (fillets) so that they would be perfectly cooked by the time we were ready to eat. This honestly was the best "wedding" food I've ever had because it didn't taste like the stereotypical wedding food (i.e. bad, boring, bland). Everyone raved about how good the food was.
Besides tasting great & holding up for hours, the cost was the BEST I found in the Outer Banks and there was a LOT of food. We ended up with lot of food left over but I would rather too much than to run out as happened at my cousin's wedding in Ohio (before everyone had even been up to the buffet once!)
If I could do my wedding over again I wouldn't think twice about using the Black Pelican for their catering.

We just had our wedding in Duck, NC and Black Pelican was our caterer. Emily Perrot was AMAZING. She was very easy to work with and took the time to customize the catering package to meet our exact needs. She was extremely responsive, which was very important when the anxiety kicks in and last minute changes are needed. The anti pasto selection for the cocktail hour was great. All of our guests loved the spread of cheeses and grilled vegetables. There was something for everyone. The dinner was delicious (prime rib carving station, grilled mahi, risotto and asparagus). Black Pelican provided the food/bartending and made the entire event run smoothly. The staff was very friendly, which does not always happen with large events. I can't say enough good things about Emily and Black Pelican. I would highly recommend Black Pelican for catering!
