Oh, this is a story book romance! It's not an easy one to digest either, lots of drama.
At the tender age of 11, we were both attending Edenwood Middle School in Meadowvale, Mississauga. I (Charlene) was playing tag with my friends, running around the field and all of a sudden I saw this CUTE boy in this button down black shirt with jeans. I suddenly stopped and had my breath taken away, of course as in all events, saved by the bell, recess was over. I spent all afternoon and the next day researching this boy, trying to get whatever information I could, what class he was in, how old he was and of course, his name!
I got all the gossip from my friends, and found my future husband Matthew Dempster, I just didn’t know it yet.
I ran up to Matthew the next day, and said WORD FOR WORD
C: "Hi, I'm Charlene"
M: Hi"
C: "You're cute, wanna be my boyfriend"
M: "Sure"
This storybook romance lasted a whole 3 days! My best friend stopped talking to me because she had a crush on him as well and was mad that I dated him first. This by the way for anyone who is counting makes Matthew my first boyfriend and the first boy I held hands with... awwww :)
Matthew moved to Toronto, I was 14 he was 15. I hadn't dated anyone since, you know those were my prime dating years (insert sarcastic face).
I found him on MSN through one of his best friends that was still in Mississauga. We chatted just to see how things were going and eventually started dating again. We were madly insane about each other. Staying on the phone all night with each other, falling asleep on the phone with each other, messaging each other whenever we could and of course being each other’s first kiss . Being 14 we didn't have the privilege of leaving home whenever we wanted to see each other so we made the time worth it when we did.
This time we lasted a bit longer than 3 days, a whole 4 months, but in the end, I was wild crazy and wanted to see what the world had to offer. I broke his heart :(, I'm working on making it up to him!
We kept in contact, he doesn't know this and won't know unless he reads this but I always kept tabs on him for years, checking up on his facebook and asking his friends just to make sure things were ok and he was still alive. It was weird, for years whenever I dated a guy and had a fight with them or was considering breaking up with them I would always have a dream about Matt, and I know no one will believe that but it really did happen, I never understood what it meant, I assumed it was because he was my first boyfriend. Haha Hindsight being 20/20 really could've saved me some time.
Through the years we would touch base every 2-3 years but we both ended up dating other people....
October 28th 2013.
I was scrolling through facebook, just deleting old messages wondering why I lost so many friends. I was in a bad situation and was trying to find a solution to all my problems. I see a message from 2007 its Matthew Dempster, we were talking about how he was working in Hamilton and had a motorcycle. He had a picture of Nicholas Hoult in Warm Bodies and I had just seen that movie a few months ago and said out loud that I dated a guy who reminds me of him! I had to message him, but for some reason I lost my voice.... so I did the cowardly thing and sent a friend request and waited.
He messaged me less than 30 seconds after we chatted I found out we lived about a 5 minute drive away from each other. We were both in a relationship pretending that it was all it could be. I'm not going to knock my past relationships or his, we wouldn't be the people we are without them but at the same time thinking of what I had and what we have now I really have to question what the past relationships really were... just a learning lesson? Just getting us ready to be epically happy with each other who knows.
Anyways we were talking well past midnight, he gets up @ 5:30am to go to work and I had a doctors appointment but we just couldn't get away. Eventually we both knew we had to walk away from the computer. I left with a gigantic smile, just thinking how nice it was to maybe have him back in my life in some way.
November 2nd 2013.
After coming home from celebrating my dad's bday, I messaged my new friend, he was down the block having Korean BBQ with an old friend and his gf I asked if I could come have a beer and meet up with everyone. He said no problem. I got dressed (I added a little va va voom [wink] ) and went to meet them, and the moment I saw Matt again it was an electricity pulsing through me I couldn't explain. I thought it was just from seeing someone I cared about for the first time in 10 years, ONCE AGAIN hindsight being 20/20....
I had my beer and we were wrapping it up, I meet his gf I don't know her who knows why... he kisses her on the cheek and jealousy runs through my blood I stupidly yell "ew get a room' where my sweet boy asks "jealous?" to which I choked on my water and stumble to find the word no. It didn't work, we knew we both had something. Matt tells me he did that on purpose and the moment I said something it was a slap in the face to him, and he knew I still had feelings for him.
We went to the bar together where we got a little tipsy and he started telling me how much he missed me, and that it was always me and then proposed to me ON BOTH KNEES so it didn’t count. I told him if he feels the way he does tomorrow then to message me when he's sober. We went home.
November 3rd 2014.
9:00 am - Char wakes up looks at phone
10:00am - Char makes breakfast looks at phone nothing yet
11:30am - Char stares at phone wondering if rogers is out of commission
1:00pm - Char assumes it was a drunken night, messages Matt says "how are you feeling"
1:10pm - "Hey, I just woke up. Sorry have a bad headache. "
1:11pm - "Oh, take some Motrin you'll feel better"
1:11pm - " Thanks, and baby girl I meant every word"
We both broke our other relationships off (ya ya babe some quicker than others) and have been together ever since, never regretting any decisions made. Except that he should've came to get me sooner!
