The building was originally constructed in 1906 to be used as the City of Winston Post Office. In 1914, the city of Winston and Salem joined together to become Winston-Salem and the building was expanded to become the US Federal Building for the region. It housed the United States Post Office, US Federal Court, US Attorney, FBI, US Marshal, Military enlistment offices, and the IRS. In 1937, it was expanded again to accommodate the growing city. It functioned in this way until 1992 when it was abandoned and all operations moved to the outskirts of Downtown. In 1994, the building was purchased by Gregory Carlyle who has spent over 20 years restoring the building to its original grandeur. The Millennium Ballroom previously served as a sorting room for the Post Office, but now is an elegant space with chandeliers, giant window casements, and maple hardwood floors.
